Inoculation over 4 weeks
    #25113028 - 04/04/18 07:45 AM (6 years, 9 months ago)

First time grower. I am trying to inoculate in mason jars. I am using Vermiculite and brown rice flour. I used quart jars. It has been 4 weeks and it looks like I ma 50% inoculated. Should I continue to wait? Should I be concerned about them drying out? I think the mistake I made was quart jars instead of pint and after I injected the jars I did not shake them up.

Hello and welcome to the shroomery~
quart jars will certainly make things difficult. hopefully you meant pint jars and hopefully you're using wide mouth lids. we use standard half pints with the smaller lids for PF tek because there isn't a tapered mouth on the jar and the cake will slide out with no need to break the glass.

otherwise, just wait for full colonization and then the dunk after birthing will help them out if you're worried about water content. they'll only stall if they're very dry. 6 weeks total from inoculation, germination, colonization, and then a week to consolidate is normal.
also no need to shake brf jars.
just keep waiting for now- good luck!

Yes they are wide rim, no taper.

So after I inject them (next time) I don't need to shake them? Next time I'll be using pint jars.

So you think that it may take as long as 6 weeks before full colonization? Which I mean the jar is fully white. I'm trying to get my terms down. And i shouldn't be concerned of the jars drying out before it gets to full colonization?

Thank for your response.

How did you shake it with the dry verm layer in there? Did you not use a dry verm layer?

It's hard to say whether they are healthy without pictures, but usually waiting at this stage is a good thing to do.
correct, though, no need to shake. on average, you're looking at 1-2 weeks for germination, 2-4 weeks for colonization, and one week of leaving them after full colonization for consolidation. thats 7 max from inoculation to birthing, but if it takes 8, it takes 8. there are a lot of variables that you'll discover if you choose to dive into the cult.
the half pints are standard but pints would work and if you search, you'll find methods for making big cakes in tupperware instead of jars if you want big cakes.
the PF Tek to the book is tried and true and there's even an updated PF Tek

Yeah you don't shake brf jars because generally they're filled to the top with a dry verm layer on the top to prevent contamination but allow gas exchange.

Quart jars generally people use grains, I use wbs, those you can shake because there's room in the jar and no dry verm layer, contamination prevention and gas exchange is used with another method, I use a hole and some pollyfill.

Wait and hope for the best, in the meantime maybe start another project

Yeah. Good point. By shaking it it would disturb the dry layer on top.

Thanks.

Actually you did it in the right way, when you inoculate with syringe you don't have to shake the jar, you want the spores to stay together so they can join up and make  mycelium. Now it's 50% colonized I would shake it out!!
Usually when it's 30% colonized you shake it. When you inoculate with G2G you shake the jar immediately after inoculation. Some do they same thing after inoculating with agar, RR says to not shake it with agar but I think it's better to shake immediately too.

OP is doing PF Tek with brf cakes, thats without grain jars or agar.

Ok I'm going on 8 weeks and this is what I got. Am I still going to get a product?
