  • 1945:  Eric Clapton is born

Quote:

Eric Patrick Clapton, CBE (born 30 March 1945) is an English guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter. Clapton is the only three-time inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: once as a solo artist, and separately as a member of The Yardbirds and Cream. Clapton has been referred to as one of the most important and influential guitarists of all time.  Clapton ranked fourth in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" and fourth in Gibson's Top 50 Guitarists of All Time.

In the mid sixties, Clapton left the Yardbirds to play blues with John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers. In his one-year stay with Mayall, Clapton gained the nickname "Slowhand", and graffiti in London declared "Clapton is God." Immediately after leaving Mayall, Clapton formed with drummer Ginger Baker and bassist Jack Bruce, the power trio, Cream, in which Clapton played sustained blues improvisations and "arty, blues-based psychedelic pop." For most of the seventies, Clapton's output bore the influence of the mellow style of J.J. Cale and the reggae of Bob Marley. His version of Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff" helped gain reggae a mass market.  Two of his most popular recordings were "Layla", recorded by Derek and the Dominos, and Robert Johnson's "Crossroads", recorded by Cream. A recipient of seventeen Grammy Awards, in 2004 Clapton was awarded a CBE for services to music.  In 1998 Clapton, a recovering alcoholic and drug addict, founded the Crossroads Centre on Antigua, a medical facility for recovering substance abusers.

Cream

Clapton left the Bluesbreakers in July 1966 (to be replaced by Peter Green) and formed Cream, one of the earliest supergroups, with Jack Bruce on bass (also of Manfred Mann, the Bluesbreakers and the Graham Bond Organisation) and Ginger Baker on drums (another member of the GBO). Before the formation of Cream, Clapton was not well known in the United States; he left the Yardbirds before "For Your Love" hit the American Top Ten, and had yet to perform there.  During his time with Cream, Clapton began to develop as a singer, songwriter and guitarist, though Bruce took most of the lead vocals and wrote the majority of the material with lyricist Pete Brown.  Cream's first gig was an unofficial performance at the Twisted Wheel in Manchester on 29 July 1966 before their full debut two nights later at the National Jazz and Blues Festival in Windsor. Cream established its enduring legend with the high-volume blues jamming and extended solos of their live shows.

In early 1967, Clapton's status as Britain's top guitarist was rivalled by the emergence of Jimi Hendrix, an acid rock-infused guitarist who used wailing feedback and effects pedals to create new sounds for the instrument. Hendrix attended a performance of the newly formed Cream at the Central London Polytechnic on 1 October 1966, during which Hendrix sat in on a shattering double-timed version of "Killing Floor". In return, top UK stars including Clapton, Pete Townshend, and members of The Rolling Stones and The Beatles avidly attended Hendrix's early club performances. Hendrix's arrival had an immediate and major effect on the next phase of Clapton's career, although Clapton continued to be recognised in UK music polls as the premier guitarist.

Clapton first visited the United States while touring with Cream. In March 1967, Cream performed a nine show stand at the RKO Theater in New York. They recorded Disraeli Gears in New York from 11–15 May 1967. Cream's repertoire varied from hard-rock ("I Feel Free") to lengthy blues-based instrumental jams ("Spoonful"). Disraeli Gears featured Clapton's searing guitar lines, Bruce's soaring vocals and prominent, fluid bass playing, and Baker's powerful, polyrhythmic jazz-influenced drumming. Together, Cream's talents secured themselves as an influential power trio.

In 28 months, Cream had become a commercial success, selling millions of records and playing throughout the U.S. and Europe. They redefined the instrumentalist's role in rock and were one of the first blues-rock bands to emphasise musical virtuosity and lengthy jazz-style improvisation sessions. Their U.S. hit singles include "Sunshine of Your Love" (#5, 1968), "White Room" (#6, 1968) and "Crossroads" (#28, 1969) – a live version of Robert Johnson's "Cross Road Blues". Though Cream was hailed as one of the greatest groups of its day, and the adulation of Clapton as a guitar hero reached new heights, the supergroup was destined to be short-lived. Drug and alcohol use escalated tension between the three members and the conflicts between Bruce and Baker eventually led to Cream's demise. A strongly critical Rolling Stone review of a concert of the group's second headlining U.S. tour was another significant factor in the trio's demise, and it affected Clapton profoundly as well.

Cream's farewell album, Goodbye, featured live performances recorded at The Forum, Los Angeles, 19 October 1968, and was released shortly after Cream disbanded in 1968; it also featured the studio single "Badge", co-written by Clapton and George Harrison. Clapton had met Harrison and become friends with him after the Beatles shared a bill with the Clapton-era Yardbirds at the London Palladium. The close friendship between Clapton and Harrison resulted in Clapton's playing on Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" from the Beatles' White Album. In the same year of release as the White Album, Harrison released his solo debut Wonderwall Music, becoming the first of many Harrison solo records to feature Clapton on guitar. Though friends, Clapton would go largely uncredited for his contributions to Harrison's albums due to contractual restraints. The pair would often play live together as each other's guest. A year after Harrison's death in 2001, Clapton helped organise the tribute concert, for which he was musical director.

Cream briefly reunited in 1993 to perform at the ceremony inducting them into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; however, a full reunion took place in May 2005, with Clapton, Bruce, and Baker playing four sold-out concerts at London's Royal Albert Hall, and three more at New York's Madison Square Garden that October.  Recordings from the London shows, Royal Albert Hall London May 2-3-5-6, 2005, were released on CD, LP, and DVD in September/December 2005.

  • 1965:  Owsley Stanley buys 500-800 grams of lysergic acid monohydrate

Quote:

Stanley moved to Los Angeles to pursue the production of LSD. He used his Berkeley lab proceeds to buy 500 grams of lysergic acid monohydrate, the basis for LSD. His first shipment arrived on March 30, 1965. He produced 300,000 capsules (270 micrograms each) of LSD by May 1965 and then returned to the Bay Area.

Owsley received his first shipment of lysergic monohydrate on March 30, 1965. By May he
had turned it into LSD. His method of distribution was largely word of mouth, which may be
why the police once again learned of his clandestine lab. Unbeknownst to Owsley, Captain
Alfred Tremblay, commander of the Los Angeles narcotics division, was emptying his
garbage cans at regular intervals. Among the items Tremblay retrieved were several order
forms, one of which came from Portland, Oregon, with a request for forty capsules and a
postscript: "love to Melissa".

Stanley moved to Los Angeles to pursue the production of LSD. He used his Berkeley lab proceeds to buy 800 grams of lysergic acid monohydrate, the basis for LSD. His first shipment arrived on March 30, 1965. He produced 300,000 capsules (270 micrograms each) of LSD by May 1965 and then returned to the Bay Area.

Setting up shop in a rented two-bedroom house at 2205 Lafler Road in Los Angeles not far from the campus of Cal State LA, Owsley ordered one hundred grams of lysergic monohydrate from the Cyclo Chemical Corporation as well as another forty grams from the International Chemical and Nuclear Corporation (ICN). Along with each request, Owsley also submitted a signed affidavit stating he would use the material for research purposes only.
The first hundred-gram bottle of lysergic monohydrate, for which Owsley paid $4,000 in $100 bills by drawing upon his apparently endless cash reserve from the sale of methedrine in Berkeley, arrived on March 30, 1965. The substance he was sent by ICN, which had been founded and was then being run by the aptly named Milan Panic, who would later serve as the prime minister of Yugoslavia, was "a nasty brown powder" that Owsley promptly returned after discovering that it was of no use to him at all in making LSD.
By May, Owsley and Melissa had successfully synthesized their first batch of LSD, which Owsley then began distributing by taking orders for it by mail at a Sunset Boulevard address. As word on the street began spreading about the incredible power and purity of his product, Owsley used the proceeds from the sales to buy three more hundred-gram bottles of lysergic monohydrate from the Cyclo Chemical Corporation, thereby bringing his total investment in the project to $16,000, the equivalent of about $120,000 today.
Despite how impressive his work in the laboratory had been, Owsley would insist to the end of his days that he was never a chem-ist. "There's no more chemistry to making LSD than to baking a bloody cake. You just have to know how to do it. What parts to use, what temperature to set the oven.. . . Most of it is published, and that which isn't published is available to an investigative mind. The correct and accepted term for those who make the entheogens is cook—I like to think of it as sort of gourmet chef, master of fine mental cuisine."

  • 2007:  Paul McCartney's estate trespassed by crazed fan

Sir Paul McCartney's estate trespassed by crazed fan

- The man screamed, 'I must get to him' as he drove into the estate

A crazed fan was arrested after trying to break into Sir Paul McCartney's British mansion on Friday (30.03.07).

Paul's security team were left shaken as the man drove into The Beatles legend's Peasmarsh estate, in Sussex, screaming, "I must get to him".

A source told News of the World: "It was terrifying. This guy put the fear of God into everyone because they thought he wanted to kill Paul. This was the most frightening incident they've ever had at Peasmarsh.

"Everyone was terrified that the guy could turn nasty. No one knew if he was armed."

Security guards managed to stop the man reaching Paul's home by activating an emergency gate, but only after he had managed to get within yards of Paul's house.

The intruder who fled before police arrived on the scene was arrested after a three-mile high-speed chase.

The man has now been sectioned and detained in a local psychiatric hospital.

A police spokesman said: "We received a call from a security officer at Peasmarsh and later arrested a man at his home address. He was initially arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and failing to stop when challenged by police.

"He was later detained under the Mental Health Act and is not facing criminal charges."

Paul, 64, was not at home when the terrifying incident happened as he was having lunch locally with friends.

Fellow Beatle John Lennon was shot dead outside his New York home in 1980 by crazed fan Mark Chapman.

The late George Harrison narrowly escaped death after being stabbed in the chest by a fan who broke into his home seven years ago.

Why cant acid be around like that again? Even when it is, it's like 50 mics a hit. Boo! One of those caps would be enough for a pretty heavy trip.

That hayday of acid has come and passed.

The man was a pioneer, was also a great sound engineer.  Genius would best describe him.

Fun Fact:  He created the Grateful Dead skull symbol!!!

10 years since that crazy fan broke into Paul McCartney's property.  It was a non-event in most ways.  Paul wasn't home.  The guy didn't get into the house and he didn't have a weapon.  But after George Harrison nearly died after being stabbed by a home invader 7 years prior and of course John Lennon being killed in front of his home 27 years prior, the McCartney incident was a "here we go again" moment.  Thankfully Paul was and is okay.  But it just makes you wonder what it is about The Beatles that caused maniacs to become violently obsessed with them.  And so many years after they had broken up.

I suppose if you were someone who wasn't going to be drafted, then it might have been pretty nice in the 1965 psychedelic scene.
