So far I'm fluent in English and Greek. I'm pretty close to fluent in Spanish, and know the essentials of Latin, but I voted 2. Try not to vote for a language unless you're really confident that you can hold a normal conversation, written and spoken.

It is a good idea for self development to study another language beside your home one

You're doin pretty good so far. English is a tough one, from what I gather from non-native speakers. Just remember your past tense -ed on stop

if any of you have kids or have friends, etc with kids you should get them engaged with other languages as early as possible, it dramatically increases their ability to learn more later on

Google translate is absolute garbage, do not listen to that advice if you are serious about learning a language and conversing with its speakers.

dual lingo is good for super basics, but there's lots one can do to learn stuff. only thing is it takes a really long time. I am taking high level university courses and I would end up putting more time into my Spanish than anything else because it is all about repetition
edit- yea google translate is garbage for the most part. unless you want to speak really formally in short bursts

Also, it sadly is almost essential to converse with native speakers in order to become fluent in a language. There are many lingual and conversational quirks that you would never learn in a classroom, and obviously slang and shit like that. But generally, if you have a grasp of the language, these will be fairly easy to pick-up if you move to a new country.

And you are right, repitition is KEY. If you're doing something like Rosetta Stone or duolingo, repeat the pronouncian/alphabetical lessons over and over and over and over and over again until its all you can fuckin think about. Then move to the basics. Do that over and over again. And so on. Fucking ingrain that shit into your head. Watch videos of people speaking in the language. Movies. Music. Act like you speak the language, if that makes sense. You need to OBSESS over this if you want any hope of becoming a fluent speaker.

I used to be the type that would get mad people would be in service jobs or something and speak terrible English, now I feel their pain of trying but just not having the ability

yea, I am surprised the amount of people who I hear learned a language from tv shows. mila kunis says she learned form the price is right. weird

Practice is key to learning a language. Sitting in a class will only give you some of the basics and if you don't use it you forget it pretty rapidly. Being able to carry on a conversation is the definition of being fluent. If you have to stop all the time and think what was that word, you are not yet fluent. You should be able to express your thoughts using other words if you can't think of the exact one.

I put 4, though I can puzzle out the meaning of a few others especially if its written but that is not the same as speaking it.

I recommend going for the most popular ones if you are going to learn a new language. Little used languages mean you will have a very hard time finding someone to practice with and it will do you little good. I studied chinese briefly but did not have the time or commitment to stay with it. One you become fluent in one you have to keep practicing it constantly or at least occasionally to maintain your grasp on it.

You become more proficient in your native language by learning others because the root words are often similar. With chinese that is not the case and is one reason its so difficult. Plus the pronunciation, the tones, the characters, etc.

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.” (attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville political philosopher Circa 1835)

Try harder. Learninga foreign language is the best thing you can do for your brain.

If anyone voted "other", it'd be cool if you would say what language(s) it is. I'm curious, there's more than I expected.
