Recommendations PF Tek
    #25092276 - 03/26/18 03:20 PM (6 years, 3 days ago)

Hello, can anyone recommend a PF Tek to read which is for the following:

emphasis on easy success with limited equipment

have already a very small pressure cooker

don't have big air chamber to work in

Need to also include how to use agar and p.dishes?

Would like to use an easy substrate like vermiculite.

One final question, is general purpose agar plates that they use in school science for growing mould from innoulated loops ok?

1. That's what the pf tek is for
2. Dont even need a pressure cooker for pf tek. Size only limits the # of jars you can do at a time anyway.
3. So make a bigger one. You need one that's comfortable to use
4. That's a different tek.
5. The PF tek is 50% vermiculite already. 2 parts verm 1 part water 1 part brf all by volume

Pf tek links are in the getting started sticky post in the getting started forum as well as what tiger posted

Also, you don't need a pressure cooker for pf cakes. Just a big pot with a lid that fits well.

Buy a big clear plastic tote and cut some holes in it to make your still air box.

Vermiculite has no nutrients in it. Thats why we mix it with brown rice flour. We use a half inch layer of dry verm on top of the cakes to use as a filter. Just watch the videos all the way through and then come back with your questions.

cheers for the help. You know that left over kit I had which was mostly mould and maybe a bit of mycelium (possibly?) Now it's staring to get warmer in the UK, is it worth seeing if mushrooms grow out the clean end of it? Or if a cake has mould somewhere on it, is the whole thing toast? I'm speaking as someone who never did shrooms before, maybe only need a few to begin with?

Try tossing it outside. The mold spores will spread all over your home and potentially ruin future grows. You might get some shrooms out of it but if it's "mostly mold" I doubt it.

Sorry 1 more question, having just watched  the you tube tek, can you pressure cook the jar complete with the lids on like that with all the vermiculite and BRF in them. Don't want them to explode or anything like that? I though maybe you would pressure cook with the lids off first, or is it because they already have holes in them, that this is not a problem?

Lids need to be on jars for heat treatment whether sterlized, or steamed as to keep contents of jars 'sterilized'.

The lids need to have holes in them for gas exchange.

You need to cover them with foil when you steam or pressure cook them to keep the dry vermiculite from getting wet.

Didn't you watch the video? It says all that.

my video was just a steamer - no pressure cooker instruction. Still need to find a pf tek for agar plates. and the stuff from the schoolers supply shop.

Why do you want to use agar for pf tek? The whole point of pf tek is that you can grow from spores.

Really? I have the remains of a spore syringe from the kit that failed. Are you saying I can use that directly? It would have been pushed down in that mould and I definitely "sucked up" stupidly at one point.

What will stop the whole thing getting screwed up again?

Thank you I had a look.

Can I just ask again if anyone would recommend now trying agar seeing as my syringe may be infected as per my really bad attempt at inoculating what turned out to be an infected kit with it?

In the UK, is BRF from holland & baret ok?

Buy a new syringe.

If you want to do pf tek with agar here's what you do.

Make proper grain jar lids.

Make your pf cakes but without the dry verm barrier.

Once you have colonization on your agar then you cut a wedge and drop it onto the cake and allow it to colonize.

You'll need a still air box to do all of this.

If you're going to do agar and you already have a pressure cooker you should just make grain spawn. Going to all the trouble to use agar just for pf cakes is a seriously round-a-bout way to grow.

As I said before. You could save yourself a lot of trouble just by buying a new spore syringe amd following the pf tek exactly instead of winging it with agar when you have no experience.
