The mushroom was found growing solitary on a log in native bush, it looks like it has started to decompose.
the stem and base has dark blue bruising and it has a pink spore print.

Agree. Pluteus salicinus group. Very rare to come across a psychoactive Pluteus IME, but here one is.

Nice find chipsandwhich, I've never found one myself. That would be one for the herbarium.

I've found 1 single active Pluteues here in Florida after 10 years of mushroom hunting, it was growing on dead Cypress of all woods.. I'm determined to find another one this year and start cultivating them.

I would like to see some close up shots, can't really judge well from the present ones.
Especially interested to see the blue bruising!
Edit: seeing the blue in the centre shot, but still would like to see close up shots...

Are there any confirmed active ones confirmed from New Zealand? Can't find any data on that.

Maybe it's Pluteus velutinornatus?
The pics I have are the closest I can get with my phone camera, i'm sure i've found this mushroom before so i'll try and get another fresher specimen and take some better photos.

its a Pluteus.
Pink spore print is a dead give away. Can be psychoactive or just edible. No risk here, take a bite and find out

I think you might be on to something here.
Do you know if the blue is related to active compounds or perhaps stem from some other chemical reaction? I can't seem to find any info on active Pluteus in NZ.

some people find them a state or two north of you growing like weeds during the summer in the deep woods.
i, too, have found just one Pluteus that i really knew stained blue. i've tried to stain a thousand of them, but only one has stained so far.

It is Pluteus velutinornatus and is a psilocybin containing mushroom, here is my image of that species.

Nice. Is it common?
A cool find in any case, chipsandwich!

I would pay for mailing costs if anyone has a spore print of that mushroom available. I'd love to check it out under a scope, and get some cultures on agar.

If I see it this season I'll send it free of charge:) As far as I know it's either impossible or extremely difficult to germinate Pluteus spores on agar, for this reason I'll make tissue cultures if the specimens are suitable.

If it wouldn't germinate on agar I'd try inoculating spores directly into jars with varying wood and non-wood substrates. I will make it work.. eventually.
Do you know the type of wood the Pluteus in your photos was growing from?
Thanks so much Inski.

Everything is worth a try, unfortunately I don't know the type of wood as it was too rotted, it will be a native New Zealand wood though, maybe Leptospermum scoparium or even Melicytus ramiflorus. No problem Tmethyl.
