Expanding Supplemented Fruiting Blocks to Straw
    #25081853 - 03/22/18 08:35 AM (5 years, 11 months ago)

Hey there,

Very long lurker. Usually I find an answer eventually, but this time I'm wracking my brain!

I'm switching to sawdust from grain for my spawn, but my first batch I supplemented my blocks with bran and gypsum. Should I make a new batch of sawdust-only blocks for expanding to straw and fruit these blocks as is? Does adding bran increase the chances of contamination when I expand to straw?

According to Stamets, I should have just used sawdust, which I will do going forward. The reason I'm asking is I would rather expand these supplemented blocks to straw to get more bang for my buck— IF I can escape contamination. Also, I'm just super curious what others have done.

Thanks!

By supplemented block I'm assuming you mean unfruited spawn.. If the supplemented block was sterilized and fully colonized you will be able to expand it to straw. Its actually a good idea to add supplemented spawn to straw to get more bang out of it.

Exactly. It's sawdust with 25% bran. I was just worried that adding bran, then expanding to straw, would open me to contamination problems.

Going forward can I supplement all my sawdust spawn with bran, or should I stick with just sawdust? I need to keep the green monsters at bay, haha.

supplemented spawn on straw will give increased yield but cost more. so pick whatever suits your needs. Straw+sawdust yields decent to begin with.

Perfect. Thank you so much. If I can avoid wasting my precious bran, then I will! But I'm also relieved my current supplemented blocks can be expanded now! This is great.
