May I ask others suggestions on grains that are cheap and easily accessible for quart jar colonization.

WBS isn't too expensive, and pretty accessible for most.

To be honest it took a fair amount of time to pick seeds for the birds in my area. Theres literally 12 different types....so... WBS= Wild Bird Seed; correct? So any seed will work?

Correct. Most people steer clear of WBS with cracked corn in it.
I've used a few different brands. Most WBS teks I've seen here feature "Pennington Classic" brand.
Don't think brand matters too much, just make sure to rinse it well.

Has anyone mixed grains with oats?
Oatmeal is one of the top meals to eat for rehydration....

I've done G2G mixing different grains.
Don't think many mix before hand, due to most grain needing to be hydrated differently.

If you have a health foods store like whole foods near you they should carry hard red wheat berries, at least the whole foods near me does.
Ive had issues with prepping rye too wet in the past but these have come out completely perfect every time with just a 10 minute boil, and then turning the stove off and letting it sit for another 10 mins. They looks very similar to rye berries too.

Im not 100% sure but ive heard that larger jars like pints, quarts, etc tend to stall out when using brf from getting too compacted.

Tnx! FlyHigh. Wonder if the premix was shaken up with spores then loaded into the quart jar. Might use a little more spores/agar than normal. Imagine a fully crumbled colonized quart PF Cake

I recommend wbs from walmart pennington classic. Follow the link in my sig and do not rolling boil the wbs just light boil as the tek calls for and your grain will come out perfect every-time
Wbs does not have crazy high endospore bacteria in it so thats already a plus compared to oats. Simple cheap and hasnt been sitting in an farm supply for 6 months with oat weevils .
