Hawaiian Baby Woodrose Survived 29F Low Temperature 3

The low temperature last winter was 29F. It killed all the foliage on this HBWR vine. I thought the plant had died. But now that spring is warming up new leaves are emerging from the base of the vine!
This is a Hawaiian strain plant, grown from seed last spring. It grew about 14 feet in length before the freeze! It has a good root system. Maybe it will produce flowers this year?

So I pruned the vine back to the green, living tissue. This is what survived the freeze. I also put it on drip irrigation so that it doesnt need to be watered by hand anymore. I'm hoping for good things this year... Maybe even seeds

Making progress. It has to be protected or the chickens will eat it. This plant grows fast. Still hoping for flowers this year.

Interesting. But why the chicken wire? Do chickens poke at your plant? I thought I saw a photo you posted on a trichocereus that had a chicken running around in the back ground. I couldn't imagine that's for bugs.

But it's wrapped around the outside. Wouldn't he just put the chicken wire behind the plant to let it grow up it?

Yeah the chickens eat this plant like its a tasty salad. They destroy it if given the chance. Only leaves over 3 feet from the ground are safe.

Wow lol I need to read more instead of just looking at pretty pictures. Once the p,any is bigger does it no longer need the chicken wire. I've never had chickens but I thought they just at bugs and seeds. I dint know they actually at plants...do you eat your chickens? Or just like their company

We eat their eggs. The quality is much better than store bought eggs.
Chickens are omnivores. They eat plants and seeds, and also bugs, worms, etc. I've seen them kill and eat lizards too. They're particular about which plants they like to eat. But if they really like a plant they'll keep coming back for more until its all gone.

Well the chicken I had in the past were rather acrobatic. Even though their flight feathers were cut, they were able to climb up into a vine growing on their fence. They liked to roost in the vine, or used it to escape their enclosure. With that in mind, I wouldn't assume the leaves are safe once they have reached a certain height.
I'm soaking some HBWR seeds at the moment in water with a bit of peroxide. Yesterday I filed off part of the seed coat, away from the germination eye. They have already swollen significantly. I'm wondering though if I should let them germinate in the water, or if I should plant them into soil? The seed coat is said to be prone to rot, so I was inclined to leave them in the water.

I planted about 20 seeds directly into the soil in this spot. Didn't soak them or do any kind of prep at all. 5 or 6 seedlings sprouted and I let the strongest one live and culled the others.

It seems like the cotyledons are breaking free from the seed coat after a two-day soak. Not sure if this is a good sign though, since they don't contain any chlorophyll and no roots are tearing open the germ eye yet. So I boiled some dried sphagnum moss and placed them in there.
I won't be hijacking this thread anymore from now on! Beautiful plant Grey Fox and I wish I had the climate to keep them outdoors their whole life.

Best luck with your seeds. Please let us know how things turn out.
I'm going to keep giving updates on my plant, with the main purpose of showing whether or not HBWR will flower and produce seed in a climate where winter frosts kill them back to the ground.

Super hardy plant. I had one for 4 years that survived dipping below freezing several times along with lots of abuse and didn’t seem to even care. I eventually gave it to a friend who killed it by not watering it.
