I’ve never used a casing layer intentionally. I did the damion coir tek where he adds a top layer of straight coir to cover the exposed grains from the wbs. Well obviously everything colonized underneath in about a week but it started pinning when about 30 percent of the layer was colonized even without taking the tape off the holes and adding polyfil. I saw it knotting up like crazy so I put the polyfil in and let her do her thing. I have another tub from this clone that’s not using a top layer and its starting to knot. With this clone I get pinsets like this I iv now just about every tub. My issue is when I get a pinset like this, half of them abort leaving me with jack shit for a yield. So far this tub with the unintentional casing hasn’t aborted yet so I may be using casing layers from now on if this other tub without the layer gets a lot of aborts. I’ll be doing updates in this topic of the other tub also. This tub is as basic as it gets. Just 5 quarts of wbs spawn to one brick of coir that was brought out fi is capacity with 3.5 quarts of water boiled. No vermiculite or anything else. I’ve had some really amazing yields without adding the other stuff, it’s my environment that ruins it for me. But after about 8-10 grows I’ve dialed in my technique. The cloned helps a ton: a lot more then I expect d ithem to help.

Just pulled the poly fill from one of my top holes. The stems and caps seem really small and I’ve had this happen before and had an amazing yield that blew up over night.
Here’s the older struggling tub.

Here the yield just one night after I pulled th polyfil. Just over 5oz.

Here’s this mornings update. They’re seeming to grow a little skinny and small but they haven’t aborted. I saw some fuzzy feet last night so I pulled the poly fill overnight and they did get quite a bit of growth. I’ve done this before and the tub exploded over night. They still have another day or so tikl harvest.

Really? What would you suggest? I already pulled the polyfil form one of the holes at the top last night. There’s a post a couple posts up with another tub I did this too and it exploded. Should I pull one of the bottom holes too? Or loosen them up? Even though they have really nice dry rings around them. I figured it was fae, damn fuzzy feet.

If you are arround to watch it and make sure it doesn't dry out too much I would personally pull all the Polly, bottom water if you haven't and let those things pack on size before your harvest probably in the morning.

Also maybe it's just me but the tub that has no casing looks like it might have matted mycellium. Other then that looking awesome man!

Awesome! Thanks for the advice, I’ll pull the poly out and let her do her thing. What is matted mycelium? Never heard of that, what causes it?

Matted mycellium happens when the surface gets too dried out then overly wet and continues that process till the mycellium forms a thicker top layer and it looks "Matted" down and it makes the pins have a harder time pushing through the surface layer.

Makes perfect sense. I’ve got my best pinset from multispore when I’d mist the surface and let it evaporate, the repeat when it’s dry. The evaporation that way for me has given me my best pinsets. Other then this tub with the mock unintentional casing. Thanks for the info. What would you recommend I do instead for better evaporation without causing matting? Just keep doing coir only casings?

What would you recommend I do for my fae issue on my next tubs? Should I start off packing the lower four holes even looser then this tub at the start. Last time I did that I got bruising on the substrate by the holes. So it’s hard for me to get that perfect balance. Maybe just stick with what I’m doing and pull all the holes after the pins develop.

Thanks for th advice, I really appreciate it. So would I increase fae just after the pins fill out the surface or after they develop and grow a little?

From what I've gathered once you get a desirable pinset you increase fae to boost the fruits into overdrive grow mode.
