Im curious if u guys have done camping in any National Forests?

Here in Oregon, they have this cool law where u can camp out for like 2 weeks in a National Forest. Thats a long time!

How bout u guys? Whats the rules and regs? Wanna share some camping stories?

I camped for a long time in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest in wyoming. Over a month, I got a note on my car telling me to move.
You are supposed to move a certain distance every two weeks. I was really living there, I guess because I had a job.

It think its 14 days everywhere...US Forestry and USDA makes the rules not the state. Most places its 14 days and a maximum of 20-30 days in a calendar year. They only modify the rules if a place is popular or too small to allow for a lot of campers.

Michigan has a ton of state forest land. You can get a dispersed camping permit free online, post it at your campsite and stay for free. You have to leave no trace/ bury your firepit etc.

Where i was there was no campground.  I just parked off the road and went in the woods and set up a tent and built a fire. I might have had to buy a permit, Imdon't remember. This was in 1980.

Ive literally lived in national forests for months at a time many, many times. yes, after two weeks you have to move, but thats all it is...A move a hundered feet or so and youre good.

I absolutely loved it. ive camped in colorado national forests the longest, but also lots of other sites all across the us. Serene lake near mt hood is a stunning spot over in oregon.

But yeah, national park living is awesome:tongue2:

Outside of hunting season, national forests are great.

It varies from state to state, but typically in the late fall and early winter for deer season which is the one to worry about mainly.

The only National Forest I have camped in is Sequoia in CA. I just pulled up to a good looking place. You werent supposed to camp there I guess maybe if you had a permit. I walked back a ways where I couldnt be seen from the road. Lit a fire which was illegal without a permit but whatever. I almost got ran over by a deer that night. Then Im laying there by the fire and I look and there is this huge spider just looking at me. Like the size of a tarantula. It turned around a went the other way. I love that place. My favorite place I have ever been to.

In Oregon every forest is different as to how far you have to move after two weeks. My local National Forest you have to leave the national forest after two weeks, if you move to another spot you and the Law Enforcement Officers recognize you, they'll tell you to leave and try to take further action if you push it.

There is also Bureau of Land Management land that you can disperse camp on. You can move to a different place on BLM land after two weeks and keep camping, but it's supposed to be at least 20 miles away from your previous campsite.

Just don't get caught or be noticeable to law enforcement, out of sight out of mind, and you can stay a long time. Also pack out all trash, bury all human waste and don't make it look like you live there and you shouldn't have many problems.
