AH thanks, quadman! I havent seen your last comment on the several weeks thing..
Been maybe 3 weeks now, no sign yet, so not sure anything will happen..

ANyhow. stil at it. Been trying to buy some spawn at mushroombox.uk.. and did some agar for the first time 3 days ago.. But dont have any kind of flowhood yet, so need to get that build asap!

Can I use any kind of hepa filter? Maybe something like these:

https://www.ebay.de/itm/Nilfisk-High-Quality-Non-Original-Nilfisk-H13-King-500-Series-Hepa-Filter/121900058748?epid=1976917381&hash=item1c61cf487c:g:Q34AAOSwDuJWx61A
https://www.ebay.de/itm/Vacuum-cleaner-filter-HEPA-for-Nilfisk-GMD410-GMD420-GMD430-H13/362256140977?hash=item5458260ab1:g:wjUAAOSwUMZal7Wm

I was thinking of using more than one.. Any thoughts??

Thanks

Yeah I wouldnt even bother buying one unless you wanted to grow large amounts of fungi regularly.

I dont understand what you're asking. I know they make small size (dimensions) hepa filters. Its important to get the correct filter so all the mold spores are trapped instead of being blown at your agar/grains.

http://www.filtersamerica.com/Products/Hunter-30966-HEPA-Direct-Replacement-Filter__HN966F.aspx?gclid=CjwKCAjwnLjVBRAdEiwAKSGPIzVcQUPqE3P_TYMiOwbHqGZm1QlSL_UMQQD1hAPOKoAUErKqu_7A-BoC-bEQAvD_BwE

supposedly this one gets down to 0.5 micron while mold spores are 3-40 micron according to google. I wouldnt go any lower than a 60cm by 60cm (2ftx2ft) filter because it gets pretty cramped trying to stay in the air flow. the one I listed is about half that size but I just wanted to give an example.

I was thinking that with smaller filters, I could make a flowhood, were I would not need to work directly in front of a big filter.. But could instead just work inside the box of the flowhood, were that would be a possitive pressure with clean air..

Like this:
http://www.rv-orchidworks.com/orchidtalk/flasking-equipment-technique/33613-laminar-flow-hood-question.html

As mentioned before, getting those big filters shipped to my country is quite expensive.. :frown:

Okay, thanks for the info, chwyn!
I guess all I can do it try..

I have some plates running right now, that I made 5 days ago, and there is some bacterial blots in the middle of the plates..
If I can get rid of that with a flowhood, that would be lovely..!

Bacteria is unaffected by a flowhood. Whenever I have a bacterial plate I try to  take pieces of clean mycilium as quickly as possible and move it to a fresh plate
The trick is to transfer before the bacteria spreads.

Okay, thanks for the info..! Will keep that in mind..

7 days ago I tried making some agar plates for the first time ever..
So far I am ok happy with the results.

Cut up a small plate with grey oyster and tried using 2 syringes with LC, with shiitake and enokitake..

The oysters:

The 3 on top look like they are without contamination. But it looks like they dont grow evenly from the transfer piece.. Normal??

The lower left has a contamination next to the transfer piece.. Looks like the only place with contamination.. Can I still use the plate to inoculate grains if I cut out the contaminated area? Or bad idea???

Also, the growth is sort of whispy. Tried taking a pic:
when I see pics it looks not so whispy in growth..

Next is shiitake from LC syringe.
The 2 on top I acidentially squished too much out the syringe.. :S

Looks ok..?
It seems to be growing.. Albeit a bit more slow than the oyster:

last is enokitake.
Here is pushed out too much on almost all of them.. haha

Hard to tell for me if they have started to grow..
The best one looks like this:

Any thought are much apreciated!!

If I think correctly, the oysters are ready to go to grain very soon??

Hey! Oysters are looking good. They should already be in grain though. Its better not to let plates grow more if the mycelium has reached the plate sides. It will climb out and catch all crazy contaminants. shiitake looks like mold.  The rest dont look good... They must have a foul smell.

Try not to touch the plates with bare hands. Even after rubbing your hands with alcohol for 5 minutes, you will always excrete yeasts and other stuff from your pores. Wear latex gloves and dont just rub them with alcohol, wipe them with paper soaked with alcohol before you touch plates.

The oysters are ready for transfers to fresh plates. Don't take transfers from edges of the plates, that where contams like to hang out.

A few of the shiitake look ok to take transfers from.

I can't tell if that single enoki is bacterial or if it's myc growth. If it's myc, it's ready for transfers. The rest of the enoki are bacterial.

Any with bad bacterial growth I'd toss.

Hey guys.
to update, i think only the oyster was good. The other ones are all still looking funny..

But i have made a new batch of plates and made 20 oyster plates. Might be too many, but its mostly for trying the techniqe and such..

Also made a strawlog today. Going on vacation tomorrow, so hope they look good when I get back..

Thanks for your help and input!!
