Hunting Contamination??
    #25069163 - 03/16/18 04:16 PM (6 years, 13 days ago)

So there is a really nice spot nearby with a lot of greenery, wood chip and pine thistles along a pathway in the bush, NSW, Australia and I'm planning on looking there in the coming months for Psilocybe Subaeruginosa. The catch is that it runs alongside a polluted sewerage waterway, is it a risk to consume mushrooms that grow along here due to the possible chemicals they may pick up? It may be a dumb question but I'm no expert. Thanks

Yes, some fungi can pick up toxins in their environment and then release them in the fruiting bodies.

So it's a risk best not taken?

I've been wondering the same. The question is what kind of mushrooms take up toxins? All of them? Some of them?

It's kinda crazy if you end up poisoning yourself on a perfectly edible ID'd mushroom, just because it ended up absorbing harmful toxins from the environment.

Heavy metals are something that is often associated with edible mushroom poisoning. High concentrations of lead in the soil near roads can be absorbed by mushrooms. Other toxic metals as well, mercury, cadmium, aluminum.... Mushrooms will mostly digest or avoid organic compounds, I haven't heard of mushrooms absorbing any other toxin. If those are growing near fecal matter, then bacteria surrounding the fruiting bodies will be the main source of concern.

So basically mushrooms found in urban or otherwise uncertain areas should be consumed with caution (if at all?). Does that concern all mushrooms? (psychedelics, edibles, morels?)

For example (why I specifically quoted morels), this mushroom observer post from 2009 had me wondering as they were found just outside their apartment, growing out of the street: http://mushroomobserver.org/19882?q=GvOB

I was wondering if morels growing like that could have absorbed toxins from nearby (like lead).

Some of them, unfortunately I'm not sure which ones, but its clear some species do it much more than others.

Well, they are used for phytoremediation/mycoremediation so I am sure they suck up and process contams.

ALL mushrooms have the potential to absorb toxins from the environment. Mushrooms found growing on roadsides and areas with possible contaminants should not be consumed.
