Gary Lincoff has passed away.
He was best known as the author of the Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Mushrooms.
He was also a regular at the Telluride Mushroom Festival.
RIP

RIP. A true giant from where I'm standing.
I believe it was Gary Lincoff who "skipped a boring taxonomic conference" with Dr. Steven Pollock, in Tampa FL, in the 70s to discover the Mexicana strain we all currently call Psilocybe Tampanensis today.
Please correct me if I'm wrong about that.

I unfortunately did not get a chance to meet him in person, I was hoping to this past spring when I traveled to NYC to give a talk for the NYMS. But our paths never crossed. We did talk on facebook from time to time. He will be sorely missed.

That is sad news indeed.
He surely left us a good legacy.
Rest in peace.

Rest in Peace Gary. I only met him once in person very briefly when he gave a lecture at NJMA. He had an incredible amount of knowledge to share.

That Audobon guide was my first mushroom bible in the late 80s, before there were a lot of more specific texts available in your basic bookstore. It was from the single photo of psilocybe cyanescens (bluing psilocybe) that I identified my first find in my friends yard when I was 17. Amazing contribution to the hobby we love!

RIP Brotha! ..we 1st met in 70s on a NY Myc walk when I approached Gary and John Cage holding a specimen picked from a logful of orange mushrooms and they shouted out "Gyms" and about a dozen smiling faces attacked the log for reasons unknown to me -
Fortunately got to spend some time on a NJ foray a few years ago and found some other orange mushrooms
Major contributor to the field though the made-up names used to me Audubon guide drive me nuts though I think that's more due to the editor than the author G
