Oysters in polypropylene bottles
    #25060575 - 03/13/18 03:28 PM (2 months, 10 days ago)

Does anyone use bottles to grow oysters? Logs, bags, and buckets are the standard but it seems many "especially European" commercial businesses use pp5 containers. I'm curious about the efficiency, BE%, etc.

It cuts out pasteurization and bag waste but diminished returns could offset this. I know they are used also because it's much easier to automate but I'm wondering if this is the main appeal?

You mean Asian?  Never seen a european bottle farm.  AFAIK it's somewhere around 300k for the production line and maybe another 100 or 200k for bottles.  Then you can grow 100k#/mo with maybe 5 or 10 ppl.

Yeah Asian lol. So it's mostly for automation and standardization?

Savings of labor and material costs.  Probably break even on the bottles after the 10th run.  Downside is you'd need a huge market to sell into to justify the upfront cost.
