Red/Brown spots in BRF cakes
    #25060509 - 03/13/18 02:54 PM (3 months, 8 days ago)

Firstly, my apologies if this contam has been ID'd elsewhere.  I've been searching and searching and couldn't find anything conclusive though.

A friend of mine has had these small reddish-brown spots showing up in some of his BRF cake jars:

They originally appeared in his last batch of 8 half-pint jars, which he immediately PC'd for 75mins, emptied the jars outside and put the jars into the dishwasher.

They then appeared only a day after inoculating this next batch... so far 2 jars are showing these spots.

Both batches were inoculated with MS syringes from the same online supplier.  He suspects that either the MS syringes were bad, as he has not had a single jar germinate or colonize from 4 syringes he has used from this supplier, or that whatever contam this is might have survived the initial 75min PC, the dishwasher, and the 60min PC with the new batch of BRF substrate (unlikely?).

Does anyone know what this contam is?

Wow, now that's kind of surprising!

I can only assume, if it is indeed rust, that it was caused by the jar lid during PC'ing.

The lids are practically brand new and no rust was noticeably present on them before PC'ing them with the latest batch of BRF substrate.

It's also odd how it seems to be "growing", although, very slowly, in the jars.

Would you keep them around a bit longer, or ditch them?

you made gas exchange holes? The metal getting wet is the only explanation I can offer.

if it doesn't get any bigger, definitely rust.

Oh ya, all my jars have at least 4 holes that were used for inoculating, uncovered.  Some wetness was noticed on the lids when removing from PC and taking the tinfoil off... assume it was condensation from the steam but not sure how to avoid that.

Tighter foil. Really it doesn't hurt anything. my jars come out the same way. as long as there aren't pools of water you should be good.

Thanks for the tip.

The jars will continue on for now, unless there's a noticeable effect that the rust spots have with any mycelium growth.
