Jars Humidity
    #2505837 - 04/01/04 04:13 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Alright here is my dilema, i feel that half of my jars humidity is way too high, from the sight of the massive droplets in the jars. The only problem is that i did not put my jar seals upside down to easily loosen it to let the humidity out. The other problem is that when making the jars i forgot about the layer of vermiculate to help keep the jars sterile. There are no contams in the jars so they did fine without the verm but now im afraid if i were to loosen up the lids that contams will easily get into my jars. What do you guys think i should do?

dont worry about the droplets of water would be a good start.
those are inevitable, and rarely cause a problem.

also, condensation (droplets) arent a sign of high humidity, its a sign of temperature difference between the outside and inside. e.g. when its warm in your car on a cold night, the windows fog up.

Oh alright well i still have 2 jars that are about half colonized and seem like they have stopped and i have 4 that just have very small patches of mycelium in the jars. This is after almost 4 weeks of colonization. Ive got 6 jars that are doing well and almost fully colonized. What happened to these other ones? Is there anything i can do to get them going again? i dont understand why they would just stop.

lack of oxygen, or dead spots.

if you tape your holes, remove the tape. tape or no, flip the jars upside down for a couple days and see if the growth resumes. if not, its either a dead spot, or a contam.

dead spots come from improperly mixing your substrate, e.g. if you dump all your brf in with the water and verm, the brf (the actual nutrient) will clump and wont be evenly distributed across the verm. sprinkle, mix, sprinkle, mix works best imo. another type of dead spot would be somewhere that dried out too fast/much.

anyway, flip em, get a marker, mark their growth, wait a couple days, see whats what. if they refuse to colonize, toss em, or cut the uncolonized piece off, and make a casing with the leftovers.

Ya i dumped all my brf right into the pot instead of your technique of sprinkling. Never thought of it that way thanks for the tips. Ive untaped my holes and since there is not a layer of verm on the top i put coffee filters on the top. Wasnt sure if it would be a good idea to flip it upside down though now since i dont have any verm on top.

is that true about the mixing of the substrate? if so, why wasn't it in any of the tecs? that's very irritating.

haha ya ... i defeniately would have liked to know that before i mixed up my substrate. I just thought enough mixing would do the trick. Guess not, but u live and you learn. Next batch will be the The Batch.

what i do is mix the vermiculite and brf together, then add the water. That way your dry's are mixed first.
