Why do yields depend on the amount the spawn? Is there a way to break out of that?

So most of us grow on coir and when we do generally see a corelation between the amount of spawn used and the yield.
How do you build a substrate that can supply all the stuff the mushrooms need to yield high while using low spawn ratios like 1:10?
Like, it just seems weird that we're very dependent on the grains to be giving us our yields when the whole point of a bulk substrate is to make the spawn go further. Is there something I'm missing here? I know inoculation points are great for fast colonization but how do we make it so the bulk sub is doing the work and not the grains?
Are grains themselves just that much more nutritious compared to substrates prepared in bulk? They certainly are dense little germs of potential.

Why is it weird that you are dependent on grains for yield? Isnt subs main purpose providing hydration?

No, there is now way around amount of spawn used equalling increased yields. Grains are most nutritious part of substrate. A higher spawn rate will deliver increased yields, and faster colonization. Grains are most important part of overall substrate value. As mentioned above, the main purpose of the bulk substrate is to provide water.

So basically no matter how you compost you'll never be able to be more nutritious than grain. But give that grain a shit ton of water and a surface to pin on and we can give it the best possible conditions to fruit.
Makes sense.

Why the fuck did people used to use 1:10 spawn to sub ratios? That old ass spawn calculator only has the 1:10 and 1:4 option. It seems like noticing more spawn = more shrooms would be something everyone should have known and observed, even back in the 90s.

Supplement your substrate with bran or something similar then sterilize it and spawn aseptically.
That's why edible growers get away with 1:10
Think about the relatively small amount of mushrooms that grow off a single tree. We can outdo that with a few pounds of sawdust and grain.

It will always be dependent on how much nutrition is available to the shrooms. Its cause its a living organism that needs food. And the amount of food provided equals the amount of fresh shroom weight.

I think he means STERILIZE the supplemented substrate and not just pasteurize it. Would also need to mix the spawn into it without introducing any contamination since the substrate has more nutrition.
