Digging and Constructing a Root Cellar by Hand
    #25053986 - 03/10/18 08:58 AM (5 years, 10 months ago)

I will make this thread in the University for the sake of tutorials.

I am creating this root cellar to store potatoes, garlic, onions, and small amounts of other crops. The idea is to create a storage unit for very cheap and eat for free all winter.

I just started the project. I will have the photographs up soon.

Tough work.
My yard has stones so big I'd break that shovel and my back trying to get them out!
Cool project, though.
Wish I wasnt digging thru clay and granite

Cheers

I haven't made much progress since the spring opened up. I have been planting potatoes and onions like a mad man.

I am finishing up a fence around a potato field. After that is done, I am back on the root cellar.

I am looking at cement flooring and cinder block siding. I am not sure about the roof yet.

Digging. Digging. haha

Yea I know what you mean.
I'm almost done shoveling a tandem load of dirt.
Worst idea I've ever had.

You should do a living roof!

:goodluck: on your taters and onions!!

What kind of ground are you dealing with? My grandparents had some fully underground (~10 feet with a ~2 foot thick ceiling) root cellars that only had some support boards for the ceiling. That was good, packed, slightly wet, silty dirt, though. Didn't need any support, you basically had to chisel it with a shovel. I think they used the piece of land for raw materials storage before digging.

Underground cement, especially at root cellar depth, sounds like a nightmare when it comes to waiting for it to dry. Thinking on the order of weeks or maybe months, here. I guess it wouldn't be that bad if you at one point completely opened the cellar up to the sky, but you still have to deal with weather and reburying everything. Ours were quite humid.

To be fair, this was a dacha without running water, so old and partially collapsed/structurally compromised root cellars just got converted into outhouses after a few years of use. Move the poop shack over and cover the old hole with dirt from the new root cellar. Rotate crops on top for a half decade or so, and if you properly covered the poop, it will be gone without leaving a mini-sinkhole, replaced by extremely fertile ground. Knocking some holes in the walls of the root cellar prior to conversion usually seemed to help. As did occasionally tossing a layer of dirt on the poo, but we did that when we left for long periods of time to avoid animal damage anyway. A 10-12" layer of dry leaves once in a while, followed by dirt, is also quite good for smell. though if you do that and leave for too long, you'll have flowers growing up the poop hole.

EDIT: I know "partial collapse" sounds terrifying when we're talking about a ten foot hole that is roughly six by eight feet and only has a single opening about two feet square on one side, especially when you're in it. It basically consisted of us losing the bottom shelves or two over a period of 3-5 years. Basically, the walls would dry into a hard crust and pieces would get knocked off by contact over time. Eventually, we started wiring a single lamp into the holes to make life a little easier when storing/removing food. The holes we dug were quite good at keeping things below 50F in the warmest of summer days.

EDIT2: Ex-poop holes make *great* herb gardens. Two years of that, then tomatoes, then cucumbers. Something that takes up very little space and gets *massive* benefits from the fertility boost.

Pretty neat. What did they used for the flooring at your grandparent's root cellar?

The ground I am working with is fine soil, then clay, then shale.

No flooring at all. Just packed dirt.

Clay should make a good, fairly sturdy, soil. Definitely capable of supporting itself when packed. Careful with water, though.
