P. subcubensis isn't a real species.  The others are.

However OP probably has P. cubensis.

I'm completely inexperienced about this, and you're the mycologist ofcourse, but wikipedia says this about the subcubensis:

"Psilocybe subcubensis is an entheogenic species of mushroom in the Hymenogastraceae family. The mushroom contains the medicinal compounds psilocybin and psilocin. Psilocybe subcubensis was first described by Mexican mycologist Gaston Guzman. It is the pantropical sister species of Psilocybe cubensis. It is macroscopically identical to Psilocybe cubensis but has smaller spores."

So practically the same, but with smaller spores? But we shouldn't regard it as an actual real species because it's so similar to cubensis?

Sending spore prints is quite safe, they can be easily concealed between two pieces of thin cardboard in an ordinary envelope. People send and receive thousands of prints daily, and I never heard of a bust, even in countries where it's illegal. There have been a few spore syringe busts, because a syringe full of liquid is suspicious and bulky.
Something similar can be done with a piece of dry material, although that is a bit more risky. But still people receive tissue samples often and without problems.
I know I'm prejudiced and know next to nothing about Zimbabwe and it's customs, except what I hear in "western" media (nothing of which is very nice), but I'm kinda doubtful there would be many scientists there interesting in sequencing DNA or domesticating psilocybin mushrooms. Also, my prejudice makes me think it would be more dangerous walking around Zimbabwe with psychoactive mushrooms, than sending or receiving spore prints.

Fair points, I was just wondering how strict customs are with these things (if they could find the spore prints, ofcourse). Spore prints aren't traceable then I guess? So aslong as it's hidden well, and maybe add some kind of "holiday card" with it, then people won't suspect a thing?

Yeah, that's how it's usually done, in a greeting card or something. Prints can't be felt through the paper, and I don't think they all go thorough the machine that can detect small pieces of aluminum foil. I don't even know if there is such a thing! Also, spore prints aren't illegal in many countries, including USA and Australia, as long as they are labeled "for microscopy purposes only".

Aluminum foil might be traceable. But couldn't you just send the spore prints on regular paper or something? I realize it's often done on aluminum because you can't see white spores on regular paper, but when you're sending them it probably doesn't really matter right?

Or can spore prints "go bad"? (I know very little of this yet, haha)

I would just put them on foil, its easier to work with.

There's only 3 U.S. states that have laws against mushroom spores, they are: California, Georgia and Idaho. Mailing a couple of mushrooms for research is not like shipping ounces or kilos. I have no problem with them being sent to me.

Tks Anglerfish, I wasnt aware of the DNA work up on p. Subcubensis. I too am curious to see what happens, exciting  things to come in mycology. Technology is proving just how little we know about fungi. I'm excited to see the medical uses to come, the potential is exponential.

That is too fucking cool. I honestly wonder if the massive number of cubensis home growers is spreading spores into the air causing a massive spread of cubensis all across the world.

Not really surprised were seeing it show up in places where we don't expect it.

Some day there is going to be a couple spores that land in alaska and are just resilient enough to grow under conditions out there.

Hey I can dream right?

I think chances are that the species has a long history on the African continent, but not necessarily in a sociocultural aspect.

I noticed that guzman had collected the subcubensis in nepal, I wonder if the altitude could account for the small spore size. Thank you for posting the link.

I agree Anglerfish, I think there are lots of others waiting to be discovered as well. No ones really took time to look.

I haven't read this thoroughly but perhaps you might find a suitable answer here:

Psilocybe subcubensis is a synonym of P. cubensis.

Yes.

Psilocybe cubensis was described from Cuba and P. subcubensis from Mexico.  They are synonymous, invasive from Asia.

Just out of curiosity, wouldn't it be kinda risky to mail the spore prints + piece of those mushrooms? Fairly sure it's illegal in most places and not sure if the cops could show up at your door one day if you had send something like that.

Nah, no one cares if you mail small amounts of mushrooms.  Postal inspectors are used to finding pounds of mushrooms.

Quote:

Actually the spores in P. cubensis are more variable in size than the original species description gives them credit for.

No one cares about spore prints.

Paper isn't sterile and it's porous - not good for prints.

After a few years they don't work very often.

There's only 3 U.S. states that have laws against mushroom spores, they are: California, Georgia and Idaho.

And in those three states they don't enforce the spore laws as it's a pain in the ass for crime labs to test them, and they don't have protocols written out for it.

You must be talking about https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/nuccore/KC669328.1. ; That's not subcubensis, it's a new species of Psilocybe.  Needs to be recollected.

Guys I just got back from another bush walk and found 6 more P. Cubensis!

3 were growing on old elephant dung - other 3 on old cow dung

I've taken spore prints of the first 2 I found a couple days ago
