I think I found P. Cubensis in ZIMBABWE! ID PLS * 8
    #25047872 - 03/08/18 05:02 AM (5 years, 10 months ago)

Hi guys,

I'm an Aussie currently working in Zimbabwe.

On a bush walk this morning I came across what I'm pretty sure is P. Cubensis.. please confirm anyone if you can!

Found at 1500m above sea level in African bush.

I believe this is a very rare find if they're actually P. Cubs as I can't find ANY documentation on magic mushrooms ever being found here.

It is P. cubensis! PLEASE take a spore print on foil and send it to a good cultivator from this site! Zimbabwe strain sounds awesome!

Definitely cubensis, I would love to do spore microscopy and cultivate them if your interested in sending a print. You should also post this find on www.mushroomobserver.org

Africa is severely under represented in mycology, especially actives. Please help change this. Thank you.

Edit: web address correction, tks Anglerfish.

Perhaps you can upload it to www.mushroomobserver.org?

And please keep looking for more of these, too.

Nice find, this is the first reported occurrence of a psilocybin mushroom in Zimbabwe.

I added it to the official list:  https://www.shroomery.org/8461/Which-psilocybin-mushrooms-grow-wild-in-my-area

See if you can find more species, there are a lot of undiscovered things in Africa.

This is freaking cool. It could potentially be a very interesting one to try and domesticate if for no other reason than its never been found there before. I sure hope a print makes its way to someone competent (so not me ).

I'm not incompetent, but in my opinion Bodisattaa or even hamloaf would be more qualified for the cultivation part but I can definitely do the microscopy.  I'm a pretty competent cultivator but those 2 are better than I am at that part.

There are dozens of people that could be up to the challenge. I would just want someone who had enough time on their hands to do it justice. Otherwise I would beg for a part of a print myself.

Just being curious - do you expect anything else than P. cubensis?

But I agree. It should be documented none the less.

And if we could get some in situ shots of an eventual new find, that would be gorgeous.  :mushroomtwirl:

I dont think sequencing would do anything,  but I would like to measure the spores, basidia and other taxonomic features.

There are other Psilocybes in Africa / Asia which resemble cubensis somewhat but are not, such as P. aquamarina, P. natalensis, P. chuxiongensis, P. subaeruginascens, P. aeruginamaculans, P. septentrionalis, various South African collections and whatever is in GenBank as P. subcubensis from Nepal.

Is sub cubensis just meaning cubes from sub tropics? I here the sporss are slightly smaller? John alken sent me a print from Ecuador i believe and labeled it as subcubensis

Just out of curiosity, wouldn't it be kinda risky to mail the spore prints + piece of those mushrooms? Fairly sure it's illegal in most places and not sure if the cops could show up at your door one day if you had send something like that. Heard some stories over here for example where people ordered shrooms online and the cops ended up "delivering" them while under-cover to bust the dude. Lol.

Wouldn't it be better to let it be researched in the country of origin / at some local mycologists (if there are any)/university? It just seems risky to mail em just like that.

His description was made prior to DNA sequences showed that P. subcubensis in reality is conspecific with P. cubensis.
And that's kind of interesting, since quite a bit of the existing mushroom taxonomy often is based on spore sizes being a crucial
factor. I'm really curious how things will look when revised according to DNA sequencing. Maybe the old concepts will look somewhat
ridiculous.

Wouldn't it be better to let it be researched in the country of origin / at some local mycologists (if there are any)/university? It just seems risky to mail em just like that.

Sending spore prints is quite safe, they can be easily concealed between two pieces of thin cardboard in an ordinary envelope. People send and receive thousands of prints daily, and I never heard of a bust, even in countries where it's illegal. There have been a few spore syringe busts, because a syringe full of liquid is suspicious and bulky.
Something similar can be done with a piece of dry material, although that is a bit more risky. But still people receive tissue samples often and without problems.
I know I'm prejudiced and know next to nothing about Zimbabwe and it's laws, except what I hear in "western" media (nothing of which is very nice), but I'm kinda doubtful there would be many scientists there interesting in sequencing DNA or domesticating psilocybin mushrooms. Also, my prejudice makes me think it would be more dangerous walking around Zimbabwe with psychoactive mushrooms, than sending or receiving spore prints.

P. subcubensis isn't a real species.  The others are.

However OP probably has P. cubensis.

I'm completely inexperienced about this, and you're the mycologist ofcourse, but wikipedia says this about the subcubensis:

"Psilocybe subcubensis is an entheogenic species of mushroom in the Hymenogastraceae family. The mushroom contains the medicinal compounds psilocybin and psilocin. Psilocybe subcubensis was first described by Mexican mycologist Gaston Guzman. It is the pantropical sister species of Psilocybe cubensis. It is macroscopically identical to Psilocybe cubensis but has smaller spores."

So practically the same, but with smaller spores? But we shouldn't regard it as an actual real species because it's so similar to cubensis?

Yeah, that's how it's usually done, in a greeting card or something. Prints can't be felt through the paper, and I don't think they all go thorough the machine that can detect small pieces of aluminum foil. I don't even know if there is such a thing! Also, spore prints aren't illegal in many countries, including USA and Australia, as long as they are labeled "for microscopy purposes only".

Aluminum foil might be traceable. But couldn't you just send the spore prints on regular paper or something? I realize it's often done on aluminum because you can't see white spores on regular paper, but when you're sending them it probably doesn't really matter right?

Or can spore prints "go bad"? (I know very little of this yet, haha)

There's only 3 U.S. states that have laws against mushroom spores, they are: California, Georgia and Idaho. Mailing a couple of mushrooms for research is not like shipping ounces or kilos. I have no problem with them being sent to me.

Tks Anglerfish, I wasnt aware of the DNA work up on p. Subcubensis. I too am curious to see what happens, exciting  things to come in mycology. Technology is proving just how little we know about fungi. I'm excited to see the medical uses to come, the potential is exponential.

That is too fucking cool. I honestly wonder if the massive number of cubensis home growers is spreading spores into the air causing a massive spread of cubensis all across the world.

Not really surprised were seeing it show up in places where we don't expect it.

Some day there is going to be a couple spores that land in alaska and are just resilient enough to grow under conditions out there.

Hey I can dream right?

I think chances are that the species has a long history on the African continent, but not necessarily in a sociocultural aspect.

I noticed that guzman had collected the subcubensis in nepal, I wonder if the altitude could account for the small spore size. Thank you for posting the link.

I agree Anglerfish, I think there are lots of others waiting to be discovered as well. No ones really took time to look.

Psilocybe subcubensis is a synonym of P. cubensis.

Yes.

Psilocybe cubensis was described from Cuba and P. subcubensis from Mexico.  They are synonymous, invasive from Asia.

Nah, no one cares if you mail small amounts of mushrooms.  Postal inspectors are used to finding pounds of mushrooms.

Quote:

Actually the spores in P. cubensis are more variable in size than the original species description gives them credit for.

Paper isn't sterile and it's porous - not good for prints.

After a few years they don't work very often.

And in those three states they don't enforce the spore laws as it's a pain in the ass for crime labs to test them, and they don't have protocols written out for it.

You must be talking about https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/nuccore/KC669328.1. ; That's not subcubensis, it's a new species of Psilocybe.  Needs to be recollected.

3 were growing on old elephant dung - other 3 on old cow dung

I've taken spore prints of the first 2 I found a couple days ago

What a find! The amount they dropped you coulda made 100's of prints out of them by just moving them onto a fresh piece of foil every five minutes!
Hope you got to send some out, to a few TC's at least. Look forward to seeing them in the flesh in future bulk grows.

Every 5 minutes? That's a little too fast.

Viresh, welcome to the shroomery, no one can give you an exact location, it's against the rules.

Look anywhere you find cattle, buffalo, elephants or horses. Psilocybe cubensis will grow from dung that has aged about a month or two,  never in fresh dung. They also grow in donkey dung.

This is AMAZING!!! Fantastic find! It must feel good to discover something like that! Kinda like when the Columbian Rust Spore just happened to come to somebody like me...somebody who grew 20 + varieties at a time and who trades constantly, all over the world. I think I just did one cake to start, printed about 8 prints, then sent them along. Grod31 was wise enough to send a sample along to Workman.

I sure hope a fruit body from Zimbabwe shows up on Doc's doorstep. This is important stuff! I'd like to see further research conducted with this variety.

I'm not telling OP what to do, I just wanna back up the research and documentation aspect of this find.

Keep those fungus goggles on, OP! Woohoo!!!

dracolusus, I feel your pain, I would have loved to see a print from Africa in my mail box. I think it is extremely expensive in some areas of Africa to send a simple letter, someone shared the postal rate once from an African nation to me and it would have cost something like $21 U.S., that's crazy, I can ship anywhere in the world for a $1.50 U.S..

He probably got tricked by that guy saying he was all about the mushrooms and lost the print. Something should've happened by now

I'm also from Zimbabwe (Harare), I'm so happy that you found some golden teachers in my motherland. Could you please let me know the general area you found them, I would love to visit it and take pictures. Thanks

Ancient thread, but a very cool one. Would love to hear some updates from OP!

Also, with sequencing, has there been many full genome sequences done, or are they all ITS sequences? Would be really interesting to get full sequences and see the minor differences!

Most focus only on the ITS region for identification to species level

This is such an interesting find. I couldn't resist asking. Is there any news about working with this variety?
Have any of you managed to get your hands on prints of this variety, grow and study this shroom?

Looks like typical cubensis, don't think there's anything special about it.
Anyway, you won't get an answer. OP hasn't been logged in for almost 5 years...
