Should I be concerned? Strange growth, wood chips.
    #25044086 - 03/06/18 11:40 PM (3 years, 2 months ago)

I was looking at my woodchips that I had just mixed some colonized Azurescens rye berries to. I can see some stringy looking growth, like hairs in one spot. I mixed the grain with the chips on the 2nd. It’s just in a 12 qt little tub, I have the lid flipped over and a couple holes on the bottom.

Need to zoom in a bit to see it

Looks like cobweb mold or something.

Nice looking growth though.

Keep the FAE up on it and you may see fruits.

I’m planning on making an outdoor bed. I was going to move this outside when it was colonized, to more wood chips, and hoping to get some fruits next November. Not very likely to get fruits from azzies indoors, but I might just have to move this tub outside right now and let nature take over.

I think so too. Maybe better chances outdoors than trapped inside with cobweb..

Anymore ideas, tips, words of wisdom?  I have two more spawn bags of the same mycelium, should I just leave the lid off completely next time?

Can you spawn Azurescens to coconut coir?

That stuff is borderline hard to mess up.

I don’t think that would work. They are a wood loving species. Everything I have read says agar>grain>woodchips>outdoor woodchip bed.

I bought them from a smoking company. Then I put them in a pot of 165 - 170 degree water for about an hour, let them drain and cool, then layered my grain with the chips.

I would place them outside. I had Azurescens on oats in a 5lb autoclavable bag. Well it went bad. Filled with blue mold. I opened the bag and found 3 peices of spawn and spawned them to cardboard and woodchips inside tupper are containers. I kept checking it even found a few more oats with blue mold on them and just picked them out. The great thing about the air outside is it doesn't favor contaminates. So even thought I used spawn that was surrounded and presumably covered in mold spores they couldn't grow outside

Definitely looks like cobweb to me, but not too bad. I think you could put it outdoor and be good. Next time pasteurize longer and keep the lid on. Maybe do a lil casing with coir for that current tub, again outside.

Or don't pasteurize at all. You can try spraying cobweb with diluted hydrogen peroxide.

Ok so the one you see in the picture, I put it outside and within a few days it started turning blue on one side, so I dug a hole and layered it with some more wood, threw the blue shit out and I think it’s fine now. But I still had 2 more spawn bags, so I did another one with holes drilled through the sides and bottom, same thing happened inside, and turned blue when I put it outside, so I’m going to put it in the ground today. I don’t understand why it keeps turning blue, maybe too much condensation in the tub. But the bottom never turns blue, just the sides. So I still have one more spawn bag. I will try to pasteurize longer, or maybe just soak the chips and not pasteurize. Because I have some  spawn in little gladware tubs that are looking great and all I did with those is boil them for like 5 minutes. anything else I should take into account and change?

In the future I might soak them in H2O2 at .3% for 24 hours or so.
