Master strain

Hello all, Hope everyone is well and thriving.

I have a pretty straightfoward yet newbie question.  I'm currently working on my first grow.  I've read some about agar, and how one can isolate strains and such.  My question is, eventually, when i'm experienced enough, is there a way to keep one strain alive forever?  I'm pretty experienced in hydroponic growing, and theres a way to keep a master plant alive forever to take cuttings from and start new plants.  Is this possible with mycelium?  Or do you have to keep working with agar, transfering and transfering to keep it alive?  Thank you all!
