Anyone able to ID these?
    #25035327 - 03/03/18 08:47 AM (3 years, 2 months ago)

A couple of these mushrooms were growing from the ground in a cow field. They smelled kinda odd. Cap felt dry, gray in color. While the gills were yellow-ish. Did see no bruising.

Better shots of the gills/cap of one:

Perhaps it's some kind of Clitocybe?

What about Melanoleuca? That specimen looks a little worn, though.

I think that fits spot on! http://www.mushroomexpert.com/melanoleuca.html
The ones I found are probably a bit old and dried out.

And apparently they are tedious and boring to identify:
"The species name Melanoleuca melaleuca is featured in most North American field guides, but descriptions vary substantially and, to make a long story short, the North American concept of this species is incoherent. The name for your boring, medium-sized, brown Melanoleuca might just as scientifically be 'Boring, Medium-Sized, Brown Melanoleuca'"
Lol.

Yeah, no sure ways to identify these from pictures. You'll need a microscope - at the very least.

It's apparently a rather poorly understood genus.
