1st Time Agar
    #25033512 - 03/02/18 12:02 PM (6 years, 1 month ago)

Hey Shroomery!

I've been lurking for some time already and now is the time for my first post here.

I'm a newb in growing shrooms, and after some research I decided to being with Malt Extract Agar.

It's been nearly 2 weeks since inoculation and I have something growing, but I would really appreciate if someone could help me to identify what's going on in one of my petri dishes.

There's some condensation, so the pictures may not be very clear, but I tried my best.
The two mycelia growing in there look different from each other, I'm cultivating P.Cubensis. Could anybody tell whether these just 2 different phenotypes of the same mycelium or is it a contamination?

I'm specifically concerned about the mycelium on the top of the petri dish ^
Both of them are white, it's the light that made it look dark.

Thanks a lot for your input!

Second picture has a yellow looking dot in the agar, looks contaminated to me. If I were you I'd do a transfer to a new plate. I get those yellow dots in my agar from time to time. Not sure what type of bacteria it is but it spreads fast.

GalliumPE, I'm not sure what yellow dot you're referring to? Do you see it in the mycelium?

Not in the mycellium, on the agar itself.

Staphylococcus aureus is usually a yellow color on agar dishes :uhoh:

Its at 11oclock on the last pic.
I also get that contam on agar sometime specially from wild clones.

Transfer to another multiple dishes now while contams are small.

Helps to place a coffee cup with hot water on top of dishes to remove condensation before taking photos or before working to clearly picking the traget mycelium.

Oh and use 1 petri per transfer. Put the tissue in the middle. Not on sides where contaminates are prone.:congrats:

Goodluck buddy.

Sweet guys, thanks for all your help. I was ignoring these dots cos it looked to me like a texture change within the agar rather than bacteria, I was more concerned about spotting any molds. I've done the transfers already, hopefully it'll be cleaner this time. Thanks!!
