Grain drying
    #25032920 - 03/02/18 07:37 AM (6 years, 1 month ago)

Whatsup Everyone?

I'm sure someone has already thought of this- but last night I realized the best way to dry my grains after boiling them is putting the strainer on top of a fan and letting grains dry until cool to touch and then loading jars

so, with a combination of teks, I've found the foolproof grain prep is-

rinse grain 2-3 times while getting rid of floaters and agitating starch off grains

put grains in pot with 3-1 ratio of water to grain-- I use my PC with another pot as lid (No Pressure Cooking!)

Let it boil away for 25-30 min while stirring a couple times to be safe. I turn my pot down a little after initial boil. But I'm still boiling not simmering.

Then I strain the grain and put onto a box/caged fan until grains are cool to touch. I also toss grains up a few times to help disperse heat while drying.

load into jars and carry on.

Potential for wet grains to drip water onto an electrical fan. A simply terrible idea which has disaster written all over it. Electrical fault => fire. Please nobody follow this idea.

Boil grains, drain, lay out on mesh/cloth so evenly spread, let natural evaporation dry grains. no need for fan.

I wasn't being a dick. I was warning others not to consider this idea as it could potentially set their house on fire and thus is a terrible idea.  I then offered a solution that would work better than his current method.

jeeze.

Just lay some towels on ground and pour grains on them and let fan blow on it for a bit. Its my preferred grain drying teqnique.

Scrap wood, window screen, and large tub. Works phenomenally. Plus the screened frames are multi-taskers because they also fit into my diy dehydrator

Interesting idea but I just put my grains in a strainer and then shake. Them every 15 minutes or so. Seems to work fine. The esteem helps them dry.

Same method, essentially. Except the grains sit in a flat, even layer, and all of the hot water pools in the tub underneath and shoots the steam up through grains. No shakes necessary

I should add I just soak my grains in room temp water for 24 hours then strain and dry. No heat necessary. Never had moisture problem. So much easier than messing with hot water and such.

I think the reason why most people boil their grains after soaking is because it makes drying easier due to evaporation, thus ensuring perfect moisture content of grains.
