Which Bulk Substrate (Can't source HWFP)

As the title says,i can't source HWFP(hardwood fuel Pellets)
I'm looking to grow different oysters and later on shiitake.
I don't want to use straw since my space is limited and it makes a mess and in my opinion seems like a lot more work and input to cut/pasteurize as the straw is not dense you will need to pasteurize copious amounts to just get a couple of bags out of it
I can get coir/vermiculite/gypsum/perlite/peat moss and all sorts of grains.
How will a coir/vermiculite and then add a supplement for it work?
I don't find much info on it,i mostly find HWFP information.
I can source hardwood, was even thinking of hiring a chipper, but i heard woodchips won't work as good and that you need sawdust.

Do you have any cabinet makers in your area? That is where I go for sawdust and I've had success in 2 different towns that I've lived in. They have always only dealt with hardwood species and never used treated wood.
They are more than happy to let me lighten the load they would otherwise have to pay to get rid of.

I live in the boondocks, hour away from everything and usually there's a tractor supply or similar and they have it. I have to go an hour for it, but they're also the best source of whole oats for me and my boonies self.
As far as using a coir and verm substrate by itself I don't think you'll have much luck. The enrichment you add may be enough but I wonder, since shiitake and oysters are woodlover they would need cellulose or lignen or whatever the L nutritional word was.
With cubensis as I understand it they accept the verm and coir subs because it gives them water and because they're not picky about their nutritional source. Woodlovers are picky.
You can always try it and share your experience

are you really sure you can't find fuel pellets. oysters might not have problems with conifer pellets. in europe they even sell them in supermarkets ... and we usually have a hard time to source materials for our hobby over here.

I do have a hardwood sawmill, but they do lots of different hardwoods and some pine also. I'm worried about treated wood or 20 different wood types in the sawdust. Thing is you never know what you are getting.

then I would really look into the straw thing. it doesn't even need to be straw. you could go with flax shavings or something like that. I've used straw chopped and not chopped. works both. or you could try and find straw pellets which is also a thing apparently. check pet stores for animal bedding.

What type of things do they farm near you?
You can use cardboard for the oysters and sandwich the spawn between the sheets.(just a pinch of grain between each)

oysters on Budweiser boxes with straw. You can use the boxes only as well. I lived with a bunch of bikers by the beach and they would always have these.

Buried phone books in the garden

You can also use cardboard for reishi sandwitch style.

Do you have folks with horses nearby? If you do, you could see whether they use hardwood sawdust for bedding. Maybe they could order some extra for you.
