Old Gritty Scifi Movies
    #25025265 - 02/27/18 12:26 AM (6 years, 1 month ago)

I'm watching the first alien right now. Next on the list is bladerunner. I love these kinds of films...

What can you guys recommend?

Ephesians 6:12
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
Psalm 12:6
The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.
Hebrews 11:3
Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.
Revelation 3:11
Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.

You’re watching Ridley Scott’s best movies, two of the best sci fi films ever made.  It’s kinda all downhill from there.  If you like John Carpenter, maybe try ‘They Live’, ‘The Thing’, or ‘Escape From New York’.  They’re all sci fi blended with action and/or horror.  If you like the future dystopia thing, try Terry Gilliam’s ‘Brazil’.  The first two ‘Terminator’ movies, too.

And if you haven’t seen it yet, ‘Bladerunner 2049’ is great.

Thanks man. Terminator is definitely one of my favorite movie franchises and I think that's where I started getting into this stuff.

Yeah a lot of old Cronenberg stuff is pretty "gritty", The Fly comes to mind for sci-fi not mentioned. The Brood is good too but would probably fall more into supernatural horror. Rabid isn't one of his high concept ones so much but it's pretty similar to the 90s movie Species.

Are you talking about ‘Subconscious’ by Rabbit in the Moon?  Cool, if so.  I love RITM, and that’s a great song.

To whomever was asking about Dune:  it’s a movie some people like, but I’m not one of them.  Too long, too rudderless.  David Lynch directed it and then disavowed it, so I think it’s an “Allen Smithee” film.  There’s a remake of Dune in the works, and I’m forgetting the details right now, but I remember reading something that made me think it could have promise.

I liked the 80s movie. There was a 2000s miniseries that was ok but the movie captured the feel of the books for me more. Also there was a documentary on Netflix about this movie version of Dune that sounded really awesome (bunch of cool artists involved) but was never finished. "Jodorowsky's Dune."

A little different than what you're probably seeking, but The Running Man is a fun watch. Enemy Mine, too...I remember watching on TV as a kid and enjoying it.

Dude.... Enemy Mine!  I also used to watch that on tv when I was a kid and thought it was super cool.  Haven’t watched it as an adult, but now I want to.  Looking back on it, I guess it’s a pretty good allegory about overcoming prejudices or racism.

That's how I feel about it, too. I never caught the full scope of the movie as a kid, but I definitely remember it making me think at a very young age. I can't believe it's been 20 years since I last saw that movie, good lord...but I need to watch it again as well.
