Did I find Chaga? * 1
    #25024248 - 02/26/18 03:44 PM (6 years, 1 month ago)

I went for a walk in the forest today and found these on Aspen trees. I'm hoping someone can confirm for me if these are chaga.

Untouched and then cut specimen #1:

Again, untouched and then cut specimen #2:

Thanks for your help!

I'm fairly sure that it's not it. Wrong host tree and it's wooden inside. More like a burl or canker.

I could be wrong so let's see what others say.

Wow, thanks for the fast reply.

I was concerned that they seemed woody inside. But I'm so new to this I have no idea. I appreciate your time and expertise.

*as I do more comparing, the specimens in question definitely look like an extensión of the bark and less like a separate entity erupting from the tree.

Thanks karode13.

I don't think so either....Chaga chunks out with a thick blade of a knife or a light blow with a hatchet.Like Karode 13 said, that looks more like wood burl. Also, I have only ever found it on birch....yellow or white.

Thanks for your insight Thayendanegea.

I learn more when things go wrong, than when they go right. I appreciate your help.

Now, I'm one step closer to finding the real stuff. :super:
