Yes. I always use fresh polyfill for every crop. If you mean during fruiting then no. Remove the tray and finish it somewhere else if it gets a green mold.
So you change out your polyfil in mono tubs everytime? I was just wondering cause my last tub had a patch of trich so i replaced the polyfil

Sluggo for the snails and slugs and sticky traps for the flies and gnats. Beer works too but Iโd rather drink it myself than feed it to slugs.
If you wanna be all hippy about it chrysanthemum contains pyrethrin, a natural pesticide, not sure how it does on slugs but its supposed to keep other bugs away.

I think a combination of flowers and beer will work. It's not an infestation perhaps but more then I would like it too be.
They really enjoyed me putting dirty spawn in the ground last year.

Fun anecdote about naturally occurring pesticides like found in chrysanthemums.
They are poison to a lot of pets too. So hippies use these organic pesticides on crops and then we get organic dog food that's making pets sick because people are afraid of evil Monsanto and their pet friendly pesticides that need lower application rates thus less runoff into the water table.

I dont wanna support those schwill peddlers. The inly beer that goes into slug traps at my house is wounded soldiers. Besides sluggo works really good and if you can keep it dry it lasts longer than beer traps.

Cyanide and arsenic are organic too. Iโm a ganja farmer, certified master gardener, permaculture designer and sustainability consultant so I know all about the bullshit that goes into labeling laws. Youโre actually allowed to use some pretty nasty pesticides in alot of organic farming, but they still generally use less destructive practices overall, however less bad isnt good, but maintaining adequate riparian buffers are part of organic certification so your runoff argument could be debated. Although I totally agree they generally spray more often, but I know small integrated organic farms that never spray and Iโve never seen a conventional farm that doesnt. Another big difference is the organic farms donโt use salt based nutrients so they donโt get a build up/lock out situation whereas the salt farmers are only using the top part pf the soil they can till and under that is salt buildup and hardpan.
The biggest problem in food production IMO is industrialization and our dependance on annual staple crops. Monocultures are highly susceptible to failure, no natural checks and balances, tractors require wider spacing between crops which means less photosynthesis occurs over a given area, which means a less productive farm per acre. If you look at the amount of photosynthesis that occurs in an oak pine savanna it is staggering. We need to look into agroforestry, alley cropping and integrated grazing practices if we want to really make a difference.
Switching out the inorganic chemicals for organic chemicals doesnโt fix most of the problems, but it does earn you a little label that means you can sell your product for 15-20% more.
Iโve really pissed some hippies off by suggesting they use glyphosate in a syringe injected into the root ball to kill invasive plants, but that shit degrades super quickly and becomes inert and Iโll be damned fbIโm gonna spend years battling something I could eradicate in one season.

As a guy who literally "trips out" on how to feed his family the healthiest, I have noticed the loopholes in the organic labeling. Permaculture is the way to go. I buy local over organic. A lot of farmers around here grow good stuff but the organic certification can be expensive

Inoculated a bundle of newspapers with king oyster mycelium. Should be interesting. Worst case I bury it outside.

So what projects do you guys have going and planned for the future?
Right now I have blue oysters fruiting, lots of atl7 stoning up, coprinus comatus and golden oyster cultures needing work, and tamps, gym thiersii, ps alutacea, and ps cubensis var "purple mystic" on agar. I should also have ps azurescens and caerulescens waiting at the house.
I'm starting beds for all my non-sclerotia actives this year, as well as doing small trays in my gh primarily for prints (gotta spread the love!). It's gonna be a very productive year for this noob, and I expect to learn a lot from these species.

It's really not that expensive to certify and at least in Canada you have to be certified to use the word 'Organic" now. I was certified for just about 4 years and the inspections were very professional and intensive. Organic is a process not an end product. Honestly I think all farmers should give it a shot before dissing it. There's a lot to learn there.

Lots of organic breweries in the states now. Worked for one. oregon tilth does the certification on almost all of them.
Things go right back to business as usual after some time. Including substitution of conventional ingredients into organic batches because $ and availability. But shhh the customer will never know lol.
Oh let's just sanitize the tank for organic product with the regular sani today.
Organic barley has less sugar per pound so it takes more to make a beer. The grains are significantly smaller so it fucks up the lauter screens in some setups.

What areas would you transfer from, Agar [Re: Crispykoot]

Hey all, my first work with agar, now gonna transfer again after I cook up another batch of agar today. I have my ideas of where I will grab mycelium for the next transfer, but would also like ideas from those of you who have more experience. These are the plates I will go from, they all have the fastest and most risomorphic growth after a couple transfers. The plates they were taken from are on the right side of the pics. I also got my first obvious contamination, that in itself is exciting, that is the first obvious contamination I have got, a low percentage from all the plates I have done, so not too bad, but shows room for improvement in technique. This agar stuff is pretty cool, I'm also saving almost all the plates to observe them over time and have a back up if needed.

Hey Shroomery, I've been coming here for a couple months to guide my experiment and I've had great success so far. ATM I have 6 brf cakes (.5 pint) fully colonized. I then waited 7 days, dunked for 24hrs and rolled the cakes in dry verm. I put them in a SG FC with 5 inches moist perlite and 1/4th inch holes all 6 sides, 2 inches apart. I did not drill holes on the vertical sides below the perlite level, should i have done this? I read that side holes under perlite level will just dry it out. There ARE holes in the bottom. Tin foil under the cakes. I'm misting directly into the SG FC from 2 feet away 4 times a day and fanning with the lid for 60 seconds. I have a CFL desk light shining directly into the top of the SG FC 12 hours a day. The FC is lifted 3 inches off the table too. No fans in the room. 1 cake has grown a single pin that is coming along nice just slow (this cake has been in the chamber for almost 3 weeks the other 5 just got put in) The 1 pin has also been growing for 5 days and is 2 inches long. I guess what I'm asking is will the cake that has 1 pin grow some more pins before the end of this flush and is it alright to have some cakes ready to harvest and some just pinning in the same SG FC?
Also, I have an autoclave bag I was going to make up a bunch of brf substrate PC and inoculate it I the bag. After colonizing in the bag I want to move it to a tray and place that in my SG FC to do a pseudo-bulk grow. I was going to use dry verm as a 'casing' since I've heard cubes don' really need a true casing layer. Will this work? What are some potential pitfalls? Also I am aware this does not follow any standard bulk tek and straying from teks is not advised to beginners it's just I want to work with what I have.
Thanks Guys
