FWIW, a couple things I've learned about shoeboxes:

1. Sterilite makes 2 different shoeboxes, both 6 quart, clear tubs with white lids. One has a pic of a yellow shoe, one with a red shoe. The red shoe box has more rounded edges and a poorly fitting lid. The rounded edges make dubbing more difficult because the tubs want to slide off each other. The yellow shoe box is more rectangular, has flat edges, good for dubbing and the lids have a better fit.

2. Bottom watering is simplified by using a large syringe with attached needle. Easy to add just the right amount of water down the side without making a mess and getting water all over the sub surface. I use a 35ml syringe.

These atl#7 are looking for more air. I have them in a martha but need to get a fan in there asap. I get in there as often as I can to open the door up and fan but its clearly not enough. I have the bottom rolled up about 6 inches or so to help. I'm working on it

There are some other 6qt shoeboxes i’ve gotten at Target that are longer but a little bit more narrow, and they have latching lids with blue handles

Here are my thoughts on why I like agar, and consider it better than the methods you are putting forward as an alternative. I've not tried your methods, and don't think I ever will.

I like agar and think it's superior to your suggested method because:
- Agar is consistent in its appearance and makes it easier for me to spot contams and sectors when doing isolate work
- It's clean and readily tells me when my sterile technique is not up to scratch.
- It's cheaper than grain
- You can work on a smaller scale with ease and it takes up less space [a stack of petri dishes vs 25 small jars]
- I can add colouing to my agar and they look all pretty
- Agar is a massive topic, to not use it would mean you'll miss out on much learning

I'm bored of writing the pros of agar work, don't even know why I replied to this thread come to think of it.

Any how, best of luck in your endeavours, keep us posted on how it's going for you, I love experimentation and learning off others experiments.

Peace

"Just the right amount", how do you personally gauge that?

JTRA=what it wants

I add all 35ml at a time, hourly or so, until it stops quickly disappearing.

Day 14. Huge difference 2 days makes. Pinset keeps gettin nicer. I'm noticing the areas where the casing was thin and colonized over aren't getting pins. Think this means I'll be casing every bulk. :smile:  Oh and only counted about 4 side pins so far.
