Bottom Watering Cakes -Using Reusable Items- * 3

Bottom Watering -Using Reusable Items-

I take no credit for the idea of bottom watering, That shit is awesome and helps out your cakes a bunch if they have super heavy pinsets that are just super thirsty for some water! The original tek for bottom watering cakes is by ComeBackKid, and you can find it here ----> CBK's Watering Tek <----

Now, With all that begin said, I like using my foil for foiling my lids, ribs, and potatoes. So I like to use these.

Yep, that's right. Those are the white plastic mason jar lids. The other one is just a small plastic disc that has some lips to it that is a bit bigger than half pint lids. Basically, Anything that can hold a bit of water and is about the size of the cake will work.

They are very simple to use. So simple, I made some pictures of how to use em :super:

Step 1: Fill with water

Step 2: Place your cake in the lid

Some cake results.

Some 2nd Flush Pictures

A few more updates. two cakes met their demise to trich. It happens guys.

It is as easy as that guys. :super:

I filled my lid with water and then put the cake in it and the water spilled over the edges and I slipped in it and broke my neck.

Shitty tek, directions incomplete

Hey ziran, thanks for putting this pictorial out ! I tried bottom watering as well, the thing is my cakes usually get pretty weak pinsets so they don't need it so much, your cake looks good though
In your experience, how much difference does bottom watering make to the end result ?

Never really measured it. Just know they like water so It can't hurt. Usually if they don't suck up all the water after 24 hours, I dump out any excess.

Fair enough,
Some say dunking provides enough water for at least one flush. You do well to dump out the excess, I've noticed the water turns yellow from metabolites after about 36h.
Is that coir you have on top of your cakes? It seems to pin well

that cake was top fruited in the jar at on point, and to harvest I had to break the jar because it was side pin city.

How about adding a disc of cardboard to the bottom of the lid? Adds some extra nutrients and is fairly contam resistant. Have you ever tried bottom watering with coffee or grain water? Increased chance of contam I imagine but might be worth doing on a nearly spent cake?

:justno:

Nice write up. I image it would work pretty good with petri dishes as well. I would definitely add in the write up to dump the extra water after 12-24 hrs tho.

Since this thread has been revived, My pins instead of; dwindly and skinny, are staying nice and fat, also meaty, instead of hollow in the middle. Should I still dunk in between harvests, or just keep the cakes moisturized by bottom watering? almost at 3 weeks after birthing, but cakes are just now starting to pin nicely.
thanks again for all your help in teks

I usually dunk them for about 2 hours if they feel lighter than a 8 ounce cup of water. but if they still feel like your holding a cup of water when you pick them up, then I don't.

*Side note*

Save those lids if/when you move to grains!  They hold up in a PC and are much better than the metal ones as the metal ones will rust.
