Brown Discoloration
    #25009237 - 02/20/18 08:13 PM (6 years, 1 month ago)

Hello I have an older incubated jar (2 months) that has some brown discoloration; I assume it's an unwanted mold, or it might be metabolites, but just want reassurance before I toss it.

I see you mentioned you've had the jar for 2 months...

Keeping the jar incubating longer than is required gives more time for contamination to form on the cake. Typically there is a sweet spot right at 100% colonization when you want to birth the cake. Too much time before and the cake is not colonized by the mycelium and is open to contaminants in the form of raw substrate and too much time after the healthy mycelium could be compromised by further contamination by being in growing conditions (dark, damp, etc.) as in your case.

Make sure to birth promptly and not to forget about your cakes, you don't want those contaminants in your home either!
