Which method are you using? For a first time user I'd try the shroom wizards guide...it's posted on this web site and probably the cheapest, simplest method to use, and will still yield a good number of shrooms. It should explain everything in there too. The casing process gives the crumbled up mycelium a place to grow. You're basically planting it in more fertile earth.

hi mywifegivesgoodhead,

casing is definitely the way to go. i'd like to refer you to the ryche hawk 50/50 tek that can be found on his site, and on the shroomery. it's simple, and you will get good results if you pay attention and be sterile. the point is to get a lot bigger yield (as opposed to just birthing cakes).

much luck.....

I dont think the answered your question well. As you may have read casing is just for moisture since shrooms are mostly water you want to make sure that water is abundant.

This is basicly Hawks 50 50 tek broken down.

1) Wet vermiculite in an oven pan (the finer type works better with casing becasue it holds more watter) And wet peatmoss in a seperate pan

2) squeez (spelling?) out the excess watter so it is hard do squeez out an drops from both pans.

3) cover with tinfoil Pasturize in the oven at 350 for 25 min. take out and let cool usually about 2 hours.

4) get your casing container put about 1 inch pasturized vermiculite on the bottom.

5) Crumble cake GENTLY over vermiculite.

6) Cover with about 3/4 inch pasturized 1/2 peatmoss 1/2 vermiculite mix (AKA Jiffy Mix)

7) I cover mine with plastic wrap till mature pins appear this keeps the humidity up and lets light it.

Dont place in direct sunlight becasue it will dry out it doesnt even have to be a well lit area at all. Good luck

The simplest way is to use a vermiculite only casing. No sterilizing, no work at all. Regardless of what you may or may not have heard, vermiculite casings work very well. This is how I do it, but it will surely be ok if you do it a little different because the idea is so simple.
you need:
-a coloized cake
-some damp vermiculite (get it wet and sqeeze until no water comes out and it sounds spongy.)
-a small container. a lot of people like small loaf pans, Tupperware or Gladware containers. Whatever works.

okie dokie. Simple procedure: Wash your hands. Break up the cake into little marble sized peices. get container and evenly lay an 1 1/2 inches or so of damp vermiculite on the bottom. Press dowm lightly. Lay and even layer of crumbled cake on top of that. I usually like it about 3/4 to 1 inch thick. Press it down lightly. Put a very thin, even layer of damp vermiculite over that. Mine is usually about a 1/4 inch thick, maybe a little more. Toss it in a terrerium. Mine are always in an unheated perlite humidified one
and they seem to do well. This is the simplest casing ever, and it works well for me.
