Coprinus input wanted
    #24991739 - 02/13/18 06:07 PM (7 months, 5 days ago)

I wanted  to give the Shaggy mane a try. I went from
LC > grain > straw/manure substrate > and cased with
pasturized cactus/potting mix.

Well it decided to colonize the casing and is now
continuing to grow on the pp5 tray its in. Been in
the greenhouse for about 12 days.

Any input greatly appreciated. Thanks

It looks like you baked a cloud pie..

Never eaten shaggy mane before, it does not look appealing to me but I guess it is a bias because of the ink I cannot easily get rid of.
What are the young specimen supposed to taste like or what can you compare them to? Is it just a generic mushroom or is it great to serve?
I am also put off from picking them very young or in their volva because of white knobs being hard to ID and differentiate from toxic Amanita (or Agaricus I guess).

As for your grow, I guess incubate / ripen it a bit and then trigger pinning? Have you been able to find the correct parameters for this?

Last year I tried Coprinus comatus clone from wild on different substrates but only suceed fruiting it outdoors on a straw bed. This year I'm going to try it indoors again.

I have never eaten nor grown it either. I have heard from a  few members that it is their favorite mushroom.

I dont know the exact parameters. I have seen a few indoor grows
that were done around room temp in an indoor greenhouse so I
figured I'd give it a go.

The bed (3x1m) was made (bottom to surface) rabbit + goat manure---chestnut leaves---straw---coffe grounds (a lot)---straw---straw spawn----straw----peat moss casing.

Did you give it a cold shock?

I don't know if it's necessary a cold shock. As a temperate species maybe a cold shock could trigger pinning, but :justdontknow:

The bed was made in april and the fruiting took place on late october. The bed was fully colonized in may-june. This year the summer temperatures continued to the middle of october, and then the temperature dropped and rain finally came.

I know a patch that produces monsters, might forage some and get a clone going in the spring.

Same. I have a spot by where I work and they were popping
up heavy during the fall. I'll be at this job site on and
off for the next year so I'll have the chance!

Nice.  I always see them around but never really considered cultivating them.  I knew they were edible but never gave them a thought on those lines either but now I’m getting the itch to do both. :smirk:

I've never been able to trust the shaggy manes I forage.
in my region they tend to grow on disturbed soil which often means it's polluted.
They very easily incorporate all the nasty stuff from the soil they grow on, so be careful!

I dont remember it raining recently before that either. Id say it was normal it might have a week before.
