Using mushrooms for air exchange in a grow room
    #24990778 - 02/13/18 07:59 AM (6 years, 1 month ago)

Bit of a weird one but my mate hit me up today saying his friend has moved out so he has a spare room and is think of setting up a grow in there (for weed) and that got me thinking. Oyster mushrooms produce a lot of co2 right? What do plants love, co2, and they produce oxygen, what do mushrooms love? :mindblown:

Buts here's the thing. He lives in a flat, so he can't put in a fresh air tube or what ever there called because he'll stink out the whole block. So he's thinking if we have some oyster bags in with his plants will they provide fresh air with the help of each other and with a couple fans, along with a small filtered air exchange hole?

I'm curious to see what the more knowledgeable people say.

I've looked this question up a lot, the other way around that is, a mushroom GH fully loaded with a few plants, with the goal being to cancel each other out.

Each thread I read came to the conclusion that the mushrooms would put out far too much co2 for the few plants that were in there.

So... Seems doable in reverse Right? I guess the only way I would have any peace would be to get a co2 meter or 02 meter and get ppm reading before with all plants and put in  two or three ready to fruit oyster blocks and check again a few hours later.

And look up the demands of both species, to try and play ping pong with the gas levels

I get where your coming from with the reversability, having some co2 loving plants in with a less co2 producing species of mushroom. All about balance I guess :takingnotes:

There are a variety of fungal CO2 generators on the market for grow rooms:

No way!

So.. these would be non fruiting, heavy breathing fungi I guess...

Any idea on species?

I only saw one price but If you're mycologically inclined, I think i would try with oysters first, assuming y'all are ok with the work load of the oyster rotation and your grow area can handle oysters fae requirements.

The benefits of the ez co2 thing is supposedly last 6 months or more. Oysters you'll get a month maybe a month and a half depends on how many flushes. But you get food too.

And really, if you don't care about the fruits, who cares about upgrading your fae. The oyster fruits will deform but who cares, the mycelial mass is still surviving and conditioning the air.

While the ezco2 has a high upfront cost compared to an oyster bag, it would take several ouster bags to equal lifetime of ezco.

Depends on situation but if you wanted the  fruits and could do the work it may be worth a shot. Be nice to see in here too

Why not add the oysters to the plat pots. They'll be beneficial to the root mass. Also your mate better have a carbon filter or he gonna stink the block anyway.

Would they be beneficial? I know in nature mushrooms form mycorrhizal bonds with other organisms and both can benefit, but we have to consider (a) he's set up a grow room for plants anyway, everything should be optimized already, and (b) we have to consider the continual nutritional needs of the mycelium.

You could make, in a sense, a flower box that has a mushroom bed that you can continually feed scraps of pasteurized cardboard or what have you. Continual state of fruiting and colonization.

I think separate bags are better. Easy to swap out. Easy to harvest. Simple

It's got a gas exchange patch.  I'm not promoting it, just showing that the product exists.

I know your not promoting it i am simply calling bs on it and nothing more then a marketing scheme...the patch doesnt let out nearly enough for it to have any effect what so ever

I'm not either, but yeah somehow they say one bag of fungi exhaling thru the same patches we have is good for a 4x4 room for 6-8 months.

But it stands to reason that if people succeed with that product, u could succeed and save money with oysters.

I dont know anyone who uses it though. It's been around for years and years, if it does (or doesn't) there should be definitive reviews.

If you run an extractor (which you should) then they are pointless as the fan will take it out before it gets to the plants and doesn't produce enough. Adding Co2 into groom with only 1 600w is a waste. You add Co2 when you speed up the plants metabolism. Extra light and extra heat you need extra Co2. But your mate will need a fan and filter end of, because they will stink. The passive air will suffice so no need for fresh intake only outtake with filter. Trust me I know I've been growing 20 years now.

Just a shame I can't master shrooms.
