I've got Trich before the first flush
    #24990913 - 02/13/18 11:46 AM (7 months, 5 days ago)

Is Trich before the first flush pretty certain to be a bad substrate?  My spawn jars (WBS) showed no indication of Trich.  I did G2G and the new jars show no indication of trich.  I am using bucket tech coir and verm.  My last grow I also got trich but the one before that I did not and I had used a different brand of coir.  Before this one I washed the tubs with dishsoap and then sprayed down with a bleach solution.  Colonization happened quickly but trich in both tubs.

Had a seedling growing in there too.

How can I address this before my next go?  Must eliminate if possible.

Trich before the first flush is 99% likely to be your spawn. Unless you used manure based substrate and didn't pasteurize it.

If you used coir you have a 100% chance that you didn't notice your spawn wasn't good. Trich is white too until it makes green spores.

You can address it by improving technique.

Damn.  So my spawn was actually pretty old.  I had made jars and didn't put them to sub until probably a couple months after they had colonized the jars.  I did G2G with most of the jars and then spawned a couple tubs with the rest.  None of the jars smelled like anything other than mycelium and I noticed nothing from the outside in all that time.  Now my new g2g jars look great too.  Even in all that time trich wouldn't indicate itself in the original jars?

I mean you did say 99% but I figure I should ask before I pitch all the work I've done.

I don't have the original jars.  Those went to spawn and got trich.  Here are three of the g2g jars I did from those originals.  These were G2g inoculated on January 29th.

Like Bod said, its your spawn

To cancel out a vector, next time you should just use straight-up coco coir.

If the growth has stopped, id blame it on larger than usual quantities of bacteria colonizing in your gain jars.

You get the trich because the bacteria makes the mushrooms immune system weaker, allowing molds like trich to develop (this is my theory)

Things like verticillium can cause shit like this

Heres a picture of Vert. on agar

As you can see, it looks like normal mycelium. I call this a hidden contamination.

I think it grows under the mycelium because this dick hole is prety sleek on agar

Rather than actually seeing it physically, you see how it affects the mycelium growing on the agar

Itll get rhizo, but the strands tend to intertwine on top of eachother, or itll be rhizo, but have occasional "fluffy" sections on top of the running mycelium.

Maybe im mixing my hidden contams, their hidden so theyre pretty hard to spot lol

Ok well I guess it's back to the agar and try again.  I just picked up a different reputable brand of coir so I will do a tub of new coir/verm and see what happens while I wait.  Now is WBS known to be more susceptible to Trich?  Should I consider a different spawn?

I'll have to retrace my steps.  It was my first time doing agar to WBS.  I did it inside of an SAB with an xacto flame sterilized and plenty of alcohol.  I remember that the agar was a little sticky on the end of the blade and I was wishing it would come off easier so I didn't have to have the jar open so long.

Any easy technique is to pierce the agar with the innoculat on the scalpel while "slicing" it across the point you wan to inoculate

Youll notice that the scalpel will slice through your inoculant and slide right out of that sticky situation.

Also most teks say to soak the WBS, i would skip this step and just follow everything else.

It was originally theroized that soaking allows endospores to "fruit" so when you simmer, you can kill them off.

But really all this does is allows pre-existing bacteria to colonize thoroughly through the grains, and only a fraction of this increased concentration will die off while you simmer

When i did WBS, i rinsed my wbs thoroughly at least 5 times. WBS is SO dirty

I recommend Whole Oats, its like 50 lbs for 12 bucks, 1 cup=400 ml of grain or 500 ml of hydrated grain

google "feed store near me" and call them so you dont drive around.

Heres a trust worthy list of up to date teks and study tools

No spawn choice is more or less prone to cultivator error. Trich grows on all spawn if you let it in.
