Oh ok awesome, I see what I did. Confusing grains with any spawn. Thanks.

Myc on grains can be pretty beaten down especially after a good mix with the sharp coir.
but the thin strandy BRF noodles have so large surface area that coir can´t do shit about it´s recovery.

I don't think any pictures or notes about sub depth and surface area mean anything unless you're running clones/isolates in the same fruiting conditions over and over.  My amateur opinion is that both matter to an extent, but have diminishing returns. Like, a 2 foot sub depth isn't going to yield more weight than 3" and would probably be detrimental.

I definitely don't think mixing coir into a quart of spawn and fruiting from it will yield the same as a shoebox. I wonder if it's made up in later flushes? Anybody have info/studies on if it's easier for the network to move around nutrients/water or expend energy horizontally vs. vertically?

In general, I think there's a finite amount of energy the network will have to produce mushrooms, and if you're increasing fruiting area (such as fruiting on a rack in a GH), you're just using a bigger chunk of that energy/strength on the first flush, making subsequent ones weaker. And a larger surface area will often result in more mushrooms, but smaller ones, totaling the same weight as a different surface area.

How much boiling water does it take to properly hydrate 1 lb of coir?  I know there's a thread for this bit I can't find it

Look up “Bucket Tek” it will tell you
I want to say 3 but I’m not 100% sure..

Edit: I read ‘1lb’ as 1 brick, :facepalm3: disregard what I said

I'm not to great at math.  A regular brick is 650.  Mine is 455.

I have just one goddamn question  :cookiemonster:

Will my sub retain enough moisture in a shoebox to make it to full colonization?

Or do I need to start misting before?

Those lids are fucking loose.

if it looks dry you can mist lightly, no problem  small substrates can dry out quickly, especially with loose lids.

Check it on day 4-5. Mist if it needs it but do not over mist as that causes the sub to become matted and impenetrable.

It seems that no matter how deep, how hydrated or how much I try I can't get a shoebox to not have side pins if I don't use a liner... I always feel like I'm over misting and starting on the wetter side of feild cap, but even then once I get one little side pin it pushes the tub out as it grows and creates the perfect micro climate for explosive side pins.

I've read the surface conditions tek and I do my best to keep the conditions as pictured and described with no luck everytime lol. I even tried a casing layer on this last shoebox to hopefully create a microclimate at the surface with just moist verm.

Hats off to you guys who can babysit your tubs 24 hours a day, but at this moment I can't be one of them I got a day job :/

Shoebox in a mono works great.

Man, this my first grow in 3 years so I am a little nervous. A big part of me is thinking I should have put them in a mono. But fuck it. I want to try the "shoebox way". Anyway,
just G2G'd 7 more back up jars if the shit hits the fan. And I'll G2G the 7th jar out of
that batch until I dial it in.

Yeah lucky for me I have a good couple clones from agar into grain jars and some have been g2g also. I love shoeboxes don't get me wrong I've ran 9 of them at once now, but I think I wanna try a mini and a regular mono now Also! But I'll always be using shoeboxes to test clones or isolates!

Unless you have to leave your house for weeks at a time, I can't see your shoeboxes going to shit. Just take a look and if they're dry, mist them. Mine often get dry and I just mist them heavily and leave their lid off overnight. Cube myc is resilient.

You say mist heavily.  Could you describe that please?
