I spawned 2.5qts of BRF jars to 10qts of coir a ratio of 1:4

Do you think it's okay to put immediately into "growing conditions" with such a high ratio of substrate?

Here's the progress after 3 days of spawning:

As you can see I have quite a bit of FAE, but RH in the apartment is around 60%. I still end up misting 2-3 times a day. I lock the lid at night or if I'll be away at work.

I just don't know if I'm "fruiting" too early. But as you said in your unmodified tub tek you don't make a distinction between "colonization" and "fruiting" conditions when spawning to bulk.

Colonized cakes pinned early. Birthed, not dunked. [Re: bodhisatta]
    #25898665 - 03/26/19 06:24 PM (3 years, 11 months ago)

Two days ago I birthed 5/7 of my cakes all contained in half pint jars.
Three of the cakes were birthed early because they were pinning or forming very obvious knots 3-5 days after they were visibly fully colonized.

Earlier in the thread it was mentioned that dunking was optional and to just feel it out if it was necessary or not.
I don't have an experiential point of reference to know how the cakes should feel or look, but retrospective intuition tells me now they are a lacking water weight/density.

Two of the cakes are developing a slow but steady stream of hyphal knots and pins, while the other three that were birthed early have either mostly paused production or are just restarting a few hours ago. Although, that doesn't seem to be all too unusual.
They all look healthy. No bruising or discoloration has occurred. The two that are still producing well have slow growing but strong looking mushrooms growing up and outwards towards the open air. One is already peeking its head out.

So, my question is, what is the wisest course of action to ensure best yield quality and size going forward?
Do we dunk the three or do we pick what we have and dunk all five at once?
I don't have syringes for injecting water and I'd have to wait for them to ship over here. I don't feel comfortable with shipping questionable medical supplies to my house anyway.
Perhaps we're overthinking and just upping the amount given during their daily water ration is well enough all that needs to be done.

I've already asked myself what to do, but I'd really like to know your guys would do if you were taking care of these cakes. Thanks for reading!

I did when I birthed them.
I read on another forum a few minutes ago that they should feel like a cup of water but they didn't mention anything about the size of the material they were handling. They felt light, but like I said, I don't really have a point of reference to compare them to.

Do you think the cup of water observation to be accurate?

This is an awesome thread! This is my first grow, and I am not sure it is working. I inoculated 6 half pint jars of huatla and 6 of costa rica (from sporeworks) on 3/16. They have been sitting at 70-75 degrees with ambient light, no direct sunlight. They look pretty much like this:

Did I kill them? Should I just wait longer, or start over? Thanks for all the great information so far.

EDIT: Should I have made this it's own post under Getting Started?

Not a expert, but black is not the right color you should be seeing.

Edit: allthough it's possible it might just be charcoal from your sterilizing.

This is actually a macro shot of the jar, overall it looks pretty much like it did 2 weeks ago. Vermiculite colored. I should have made one jar with no spores just so I had a control to compare to. Thanks for the input!

Sort of. Just learn to judge cakes and you'll never forget.

You can always make your own thread.
It's only been two weeks.

To clarify, If I want to grow out of jar with bag, I still have to birth, dunk, and roll, then add back to jar and finally add verm on top?

Wont fit back in the jar rolled in verm. Just a little verm on top. You can take the cake out to dunk or add water to the jar. Or any other way you want to hydrate it

Hi Guys just read the whole thread as I didn't want to be asking questions that have already been answered [hopefully I'm not  ].

The jars I'm planning on using are slightly more narrow at the mouth than the main body of the jar. Do you think this will be a massive problem when it comes to birthing the cakes? Someone above said if you cant get the cake out you could submerge the whole jar, could anyone else speak to this?

Originally bod didn't mention submerging the cake at all and it seems some people have conflated ideas from different teks when giving advice. I would have thought by submerging the cake for 24 hours you'd end up with a drastically higher moisture content than if you'd simply removed the verm barrier and then moistened it a bit with spray.

Cheers for any help in advance.

Just put a bag over 2 of my 6 total pint jars, added new verm and misted. These 2 are the only jars that have any pins out of all my jars. Should I go ahead and move the other jars into fruiting or wait until I see pins on each one? Thanks for any help! Will post pics if needed.

edit: I also didnt dunk, there seems to be a lot of moisture already and I read it isn't necessary.

If you cant get it out you can't get it out.
You can add water to the cake any way you please. Dunk spray bottom water etc..

Cake jars go into fruiting a week after full colonization
