Not pasteurizing Jiffy Seed Starter?
    #24974743 - 02/07/18 08:02 PM (3 years, 2 months ago)

Has anyone had luck not pasteurizing Jiffy's Seed Starter?

Im curious because im receiving mixed messages. On one hand, people have reported using it straight out of the bag for years, and others state i need to pasteurize due to the peat moss in the Jiffy Seed Starter. Thus allowing the surviving beneficial bacteria to fight off future contaminates such as mold.

But isn't a casing layer suppose to be nutrient-less? So how are spores being able to produce on something non-nutritious? Maybe people just have dirty spawn?

Also wouldn't a mix like Jiffy's Seed Starter go through the same sort of process as coco coir, i.e. the ridiculously high temps?

People were pasteurizing coco coir only a couple years ago, it'd be nice to not pasteurize/sterilize at all.

You have to properly pasturize jiffy mix to use as a casing.

Just Pasteurize you stuff. You want success when fruiting mushrooms. Not what you read somewhere online.

Put in bowl.
Cover with plasic wrap.
Microwave 6 minutes.
Let cool.
Then case.

Take 2-3 hours to cool and You will have pasteurized casing you can Have peace of mind with.

I ask cause its known that microwaving ANYTHING is a bad idea, its like equivalence to putting it in the oven. And how do you keep it in the pasteurization range if you cant control the temp? This is why i ask if you need to pasteurize. Most people would say by sterilizing it (microwave/nuke it) in the microwave, it will cause mold to pop up due to killing off beneficial bacteria. If your method is correct, then it will support my statement that you dont need to pasteurize Jiffy mix... Ill be testing it out on a couple of shoeboxes, non-isolates tho.

I would do it how RR does his Hpoo pasturization. look it up on youtube.

im trying to avoid pasteurization, and i want to see if its even necessary.

People get away with sterilizing in a microwave, or not doing anything at all other than bring it to field capacity.

Shows how pasteurization should't matter, at least for Jiffy Seed Starter...i think people assume it needs to be pasteurized due to the peat, but its heat processed, right?

Anyone else with experience sterilizing or not doing anything with your Jiffy Seed Starter????

Ill call Jiffy tomorrow and see if i can get any info from them about their process for production.

Yes, wood chips, peat based things, and hpoo/cpoo need to be pasteurized

If you are doing bran supplements with woodchips in bags, you need to sterilize it and inoculate with agar or LC/LI

I understand that, but people have experience with not pasteurizing with Jiffy Seed Starter. Yes, i understand its peat based. But, it's enough people for me to test this out. Imagine if we dont even need to pasteurize or sterilize the Jiffy Seed Starter? Thatd save so much time and confusion.

On 2/10 i made 2 control groups

I hydrated 4 quarts dry Jiffy Seed Starter with 1 quart of water (field capacity)

I put 1 quart in a shoebox labeled "'2/10' Jiffy Seed Starter"

I also put 1 quart of hydrated & pasteurized Jiffy Seed Starter  in a labeled shoebox ( pasteurized at 140F, didnt go above 160F using a mason jars/boiling water tek)

I'll be waiting about 2 weeks for "colonization" and another 2 for "fruits"

I did not put any spawn in the shoebox.

//Questions//

A casing is suppose to be non-nutritious, so how does mold grow on it?

A mold would not grow on plastic because plastic is non-nutritive, right?

Or is peat just not nutritious for mushrooms?

Any updates? It's been a long time since I needed to case and I don't remember pasturizing my jiffy mix but now that I'm finally at that stage again I don't know if u need to or not lol I'm currently using my pasturizing pot to get some jiffy mix done but I would really rather not have to do this it takes so long to do lol

Btw here is my pasturizing pot lol it's a Hamilton beach crock pot that had a temp probe! I put my jars inside (use zip lock containers so heat transfer happens faster than glass jars) place probe into water that's in pot set temp to 145 and forget about it! It'll keep the water bath right at 145 and then once it's at temp start the crock pots timer to auto shut off in 60min.

UPDATE: I waited about 3 weeks. I kept both shoe boxes open in my garage, i misted them, and i ran my dirty hands (after yard work) through them. I saw no sign of contamination in either containers

But niiice, that looks sweet!

From what i observed, i think it would be okay using it straight from the bag.

In the mean time, if you want to be safe, you should pasteurize.

This theory has not been "field tested" yet.

I have 9 shoes boxes that are about to reach 100% colonization. All 9 boxes have 1 quart spawn to 1 quart of plain coco coir. Ill do 3 with Jiffy Seed Starter straight from the bag. Then l'll let you know what the results are.

BUT if you decide to use Jiffy seed starter straight from the bag, post your results here, please!

Also, take a pic of your substrate prior to casing please (to determine if its already healthy or not)

So you've had experience not pasteurizing this stuff in the past?

Also what kind of spawn are you using?

This is just a grow to hold me over until my new genetics show up so Idk wtf the variety is (thus why I ordered new genetics) lol but  yeah the square Ziplocs are WBS to CV and the jars are straight WBS all with a casing of out the bag jiffy mix. And the WBS was knocked up with clean agar wedges so I'm sure it's clean spawn. So got a few pins popping up on every container but only a few big enough for u to see in photos still now show of contams on non treated jiffy mix

I cased 3 tubs with unpasteurized Jiffy Mix.

I used HOT water (not boiling) to bring it to field capacity. I used 1/2 inch layer of Jiffy on the 3 tubs.

This was done on 3/7/18

I also did 2 monotubs and 6 shoe boxes with a coco coir/verm casing layer.

I use it as a late casing
