The coir gets colonized a bit, but it's there mostly as a casing. Thinner than 1/2" gets the most pins. Vermiculite did not work, for me, quite as good. I think sterile potting soil or peat or even a skim of sawdust, maybe moss would work. It will keep the surface humid and provide a tasty lure to get that mycelium moving.

Keep in mind that some of these ingredients need to be sterilized instead of pasteurized
@Solipsis- I'd check the petshop for coir. I get mine online from a petshop but have found it here locally in the reptile section. Cheaper online though of course

I really need to up production. I have more people wanting blue oysters every day, and one of those people does catering events often.
I even have a spot I can use for small advertisements when I get to that point. I can feel this snowballing, if things keep up like this I just might wind up being a business owner in a few years. It's not my intent, but if it happens I'm not gonna stop it!
Which is more efficient for yield/sqft. Buckets or bags?

I'm having great results on the marketing front, but my fruits aren't up to my standards...yet. I'm happy with the results of my first grow so far, and it will only get better now that I have an idea of what I'm doing. Lignicolous mycelium is so fascinating
I'll probably stick to buckets then since I already have 4 5 gallon buckets for oysters.

Got my oyster bag in my greenhouse, my humidity won't stay above 90% with the cool mist humidifier...so should I be misting the bag too? I put the bag into the greenhouse and sliced the bag 2 days ago

Shiitake(S.75) bag 15 days after inoculation..I was freaking out when this cauliflower shit started popping up....but after a little research I found it's normal for this to happen..
Now the part that confused me...will the block brown before or after the 1st flush?

Thats what I was thinking as well...but misread Stamets shiitake cultivation tips in GGMM or didn't completely understand what he meant...1st time cultivating shiitake, so the growth pattern is new to me

Well my parents have taken notice at how quickly I've been selling oysters. They've been looking at buying property for awhile and when I went to visit them today they mentioned investing in my efforts once they find property they like.
Looks like I might need to start looking for consistent suppliers for materials and thinking about a much larger setup sooner than I thought.
I've already been making plans for how I will setup when I move this fall since I know roughly how much space I'll have.

Thats funny my mom just told me she'd get me a 20ftx12ft metal storage container to turn into a grow room for my edibles...even though I haven't sold any mushrooms yet... But I'm sure once I got them growing the people around me will be my main customers...they all like to buy locally grown produce

Nice man...I can't wait for my oyster bag to fruit...my greenhouse rh fluctuates between 85-95% and temps are about 60°F during the day and upper 30's at night...been misting my bag twice a day.. It's been 3 days since I put the bag in my greenhouse
