Looking for RogerRabbit's sawdust/woodchip tek
    #11828292 - 01/14/10 01:00 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

I've been searching around for Lion's Mane related info and found this quote by RR: "Check the edibles forum. All my woodchip/sawdust and straw procedures have been posted there.
RR "

I've spent the last 10-15 minutes searching for his teks but haven't been able to find them. Could anyone give me a link to his tek/s (and if there's a link to all of his teks that would be even better.)? Everytime I think I've found one of his teks it's just someone asking a damn question about it. Thanks for you generous help.

There are many techniques posted on the forums.  'Teks' not so much.

I've posted a lot of info on using sawdust/wood chips here.  What was it you wanted to know?

Essentially, you mix the sawdust and woodchips, add up to 5% by volume wheat, rice or oat bran, and up to 10% by volume gypsum.  Moisten to the point where if you squeeze a handful as hard as you can, no water drips out.  However, if you added more water, it would squeeze out.  That's the correct moisture content.  Load into bags and sterilize.

Thanks, RR! One remaining question: is it necessary to use bags? I would like to keep to to as few of methods right now for a bit of simplicity instead of doing cakes, pans AND bags. Plus I just don't want to buy something else unless it's absolutely necessary.

Yes.  If you're going to supplement the sawdust with bran for best performance, you need to keep it sterile.  You could use jars, but it's nearly impossible to break up sawdust in a jar.  A few of our sponsors sell the filter patch bags.  Order ten to see how you like working with them, and if it works out, get more.

Ahh, I should have thought to ask this in my last post: How does one go about colonizing the bag? Is it necessary to use a needle and inject mycelium into the bag? Does one do this through the tyvek top? Can one use grain spawn to start colonization? I see how you did this in your straw/oyster mushroom video but it sounds like this sawdust is more sensitive to contaminates?

Once the bag is colonized one just puts it in fruiting conditions as is, correct? There's no breaking up, or casing, or anything else? Just set it on foil or a couple pvc pipes going through an FC to keep it above the perlite? If you humor these questions, thanks again for you patience, sir.

I use colonized rye to inoculate the supplemented sawdust/woodchip bags.  I open the top of the bag and simply pour it in.  This is done in front of the flowhood of course, since if not kept sterile, the bran in the sawdust would contaminate before full colonization.  The bags are sealed after inoculation.

For fruiting, I cut the plastic bag away and set the block on a shelf in the greenhouse.  I really wish someone would develop a bio-degradable bag that the mycelium wouldn't eat.  I really hate throwing all that plastic away.

Since I have no money at all, I re-use all of my bags. I use binder clips to keep the bags closed, and instead of cutting the tops of the bags off, I roll down the sides when it is time to fruit. This is more labor intensive and probably not worth it to larger commercial scale cultivators, but it allows me to get six or more uses out of a single bag, reducing my material costs from 60 cents each to about 10 cents each (if used six times.) The bags get thinner and more brittle with each trip through the pressure cooker, but so far the weak point on the bags is the filter patch. Bag failure (holes) is mainly due to my own failure to keep the bags from touching the sides of the cooker. (Which can easily happen with a brand new bag.) Eventually, at around the fifth use, the bottom seams begin to fail in about one out of every ten bags.

Again, this is probably only economical to unemployed small-scale home cultivators like myself - labor costs would probably far exceed any savings in bag expenses in a professional operation.

I've re-used them before a few times.  They get really brittle after the second cycle and I hate to take a chance on wasting ten pounds of inoculated rye.  That's worth far more than the bags.  A good use for the spent bags would be as straw logs where they get holes punched into them anyway.

I know this is an old thread, and it's unlikely I'll get answer, but thought I'd try anyway. I'm just getting started with this, and have watched all of the Adventures videos (which were fabulous!). I'm going to be growing Hericium erinaceous.

I'm going to try the method RR suggests - colonize rye grain, and use that to inoculate sawdust bags. But I was wondering whether it's possible to just inoculate sawdust bags that have an injection directly with liquid culture. Is that possible? And if not, what is the science behind the answer?

Thanks!

Sawdust doesn't contain the available nutrition to really get them going.

Use of grain is two fold. It adds nutrients:whathesaid: Correctly made and used grain spawn creates a huge amount of inoculation points. This speeds colonization of the sawdust. With lions mane not extremely aggressive it helps prevent other contaminates from ruining your grow. LC on a large block of sawdust is hard to mix , would take large amounts to be effective. That all said it is possible, just not a good option.
