2 cups of dry seed per quart jar.

Load seed into pot, and give seed a rinse, or two with hot water.

Fill pot of rinsed seed with water until water comes 2-3 inches above level of seed.

Turn stove onto high until water temerature reaches 200F.

When water temerature reaches 200F turn stove down to medium, then set a timer for 5 minutes.

Once time is up place seed into strainer of choice.

Allow seed to cool until seed is either room temperature, or steam is no longer escaping from seed.
Load seed into jars 5/8ths full.

Cap jars.

Cover jars with a square of aluminum foil.

Fill PC with water.

Load jars into PC, and start it up.

Pressure cook seed for 90-120 minutes @ 15-20psi.

Fully colonized seed.

Fruits.

Another harvest of fruits with seed prepped via the Tek featured in original post.

The grain hot soaks for more than 5 min if you include the time it takes for the water to heat up. So between 10 and 15 min hot soak in this grain prep.
I would say 15min hot soak gets WBS to about 60% hydration
and 60 min hot soak hydrates the WBS to 77%.
So there is a big difference in hydration with WBS at least.
After 20 min of being dumped in a pot of hot water (after removing the pot from heat after full boil) Fooman style I think

After 60 min in hot water soak 60-85 degrees C (165-210F)

Sweet. I'm out of oats now, but have 80 pounds of WBS. I'll be trying this tomorrow, I think! Do you stir the seeds in the strainer to steam dry or just leave them alone?

This is correct. In fact, it's a little under 60%. Weighed out 400 grams of seed dry, then compared & contrasted.
Dry weight.

Wet weight.

Never gave hydration of grain much thought due to method of seed preparation working out so good for several years. This way of doing it still works great as displayed by fruits featured above.
However, to get moisture content of seed more towards the 75% range figure instead of a five minute simmer on medium heat up the simmer time on low heat for somewhere between 15-30 minutes will suffice. Will be playing with simmer times in the near future with goal of getting moisture content of seed to 75% in shortest amount of time possible, and reporting results here. Thanks for helping out.

You don't scoop out or do anything with the sunflower seeds? It looks like my brand has a substantial amount more of them than yours. I'm sure they don't ruin anything, but since they don't add anything either, I'll probably scoop out the floaters when I rinse the grain.

They add lignin, as well as, generate more points of inoculation to receiving grains, or bulk substrate. Floater removal is strictly optional, though.

I'm more concerned with the fact they can't hold much water; don't want moisture content lower than normal. My bag has an assload of seeds in it so I'll probably add 1.25 1/2 pints per quart and scoop a bunch of them out.
I read a bit about the chemical makeup of the seeds/hulls. Pretty neat stuff.

If the WBS brand being used has a lot of sunflower seeds in it consider removing some. Penningtons brand is featured in this Tek.
WBS prepped via this Tek fully colonized 6 quarts of sterlized rye berries, and working on a 6 quart bag of sterilzed whole oats.

God damn my friend, I've been doing my WBS wrong all along. Will try this method. Did you use an additional substrate for when you made your tubs? And were jars inoculated with random spores or did you add something from a master jar? Agar? It's been almost 10 years since my last grow but am just now getting back into it. I want yields like this!

And Penningtons Classic FTW! Water was clear on the first pour.

I'll post pics soon. I've got 4 jars hamloaf-style vs. 2 jars Frank-style going with PE6.
Guess who's winning?

No way, dude. Your jars are showing way more growth.
I have to re-run the experiment though, because your jars have Pennington's Classic and Franks have Dogshit brand WBS.
Edit: Even if they were dead even, you would still win based on time savings.

I agree with 86. Doesn't hurt to overkill sterilization, so if you are in doubt it will be ok to bump sterilation time up an extra 30-60 minutes to prescribed 2 hours at 12 psi.

Does your WBS also get bigger during a pressure cook? sometimes I put jars in 3/4 full then they come out 4/4 completely full when using WBS!

Nope, no more soak necessary. Thanks for dropping by and considering giving this Tek a spin.
You are correct. All seed expands with impregnation of water. To compensate for seed expansion due to impregnation with hydration is why it's prescribed in this Tek to use 2 cups of dry seed per quart jar, and to fill jars with hydrated seed 5/8ths to 3/4ths full.

It's a little early, but here are my observations. These were started on 2/10. I am hoping they will be ready to spawn by Sunday. Growth is pretty non-linear at my current locale. Varying temps most likely.

First 4 jars are hamloaf's method, last 2 jars are FrankHorrigan's method.
Growth started in hamloaf's jars first, but Frank's eventually caught up.
I would say both methods have equal performance, so with that said I am definitely going with hamloaf's method for 2 simple reasons: less time investment, less materials.
But the proof is in the fruits. I'll post results eventually.

thinking about going back to WBS, i switched to whole oats a while back to try and cut back on smell and price but I've had so many issues since i switched to oats. I swear i had bigger, better healthier fruit with WBS, but the smell kills me. i just might go out and grab a bag and give this a try.

Tried this out the other day, my millet came out with about the same small number of burst grains as soaking and then straight to PC, and the grains looked great at time of inoculation.
Great to have an easy alternative if there’s no time to dump some seed in a pot of water the day before

Gonna try this but want to place the finished uncolonized wbs into agar with myc growth 4th transfer. Should work right? I have maybe 11 agar pastyplates. I didn't have enough jars to pc, and have maybe a quart left of wbs and didn't throw the remaining plates cause they looked clean.

I wanted to know if I can run the tek but after pc'ing and cool down of the jars, I want transfer them to pastyplates pretty much, but idk if that would work, I did see it on another thread some guy basically did a grain to agar.
If not, I actually was able to fill 6 quart jars of a little less than half the jar with 2 quarts of wbs with this tek. I am At The process of pcing. Thinking if I should just do a2g if anything.

Just turned the pc off. Took a shower and brushed meh toofs and gargled the mouthwash and now to wait for it to cool down. I Guess I'll go and choose which plates to transfer.
So far I have about 15 quart jars after this 6 is 21. Gonna have a good 420, I've been good with my a2g times but this is a new grow since I started with prints of pe6 I took maybe 6 months ago of pe6.
Those 15 jars I soaked for about 24 no simmer. So it would be cool to see how well they colonize these 6 jars that about to a2g, all from same monotub but three different prints transferred 4 times

Here are some of the plates which I already threw away since I opened in open air, the other one with transfers taken are actually from a pin from 1st plates made in the end of dec, it was the 3rd transfers of those plates while making Cambodian variety pastyplates with a sryinge I haven't used yet so hopefully its clean. HERE I GO!

I just inoculated a bunch of stuff with agar wedges, it´s tedious and colonization takes time, but I like the feeling of security after inoculating a bunch of qt jars with a2g

I do not, nor have several others who have tried this method (check posts in thread). That's a lot of burst millet. Too much, imo, for comfort.
What happened? Did you let water come to a full boil, and/or leave seed in for too long? Remember, keep water temperature at 200F for only 5 minutes, and remove seed from water as soon as 5 minutes is up. Make any necessary adjustments to ensure that water temperature does not exceed 200F.

Do not add room temperature seed to boiling water. The temperature differentiate causes seed to expand too fast usually resulting in bursting. Furthermore, don't boil WBS especially not for 10-15 minutes. No wonder your seed got messed up. Simmer WBS instead of boiling it.

It's an uncomfortable amount for me as well. I don't know man, I monitored the water temp with a meat thermometer and my Infrared thermometer and neither ever reached 180. But I have done enough WBS to know that it had been on to long so I strained it and found that. I don't I'm know, maybe I'm on crack this morning but I think I'll toss all that seed and start a new.

Its been discovered that temperature isn't problem. More important point of focus is not simmering seed longer than five minutes.

I stick thermometer as deep into water as I can get it without burning myself. I don't think you're on crack, but try again and be sure not to simmer seed for longer than 5 minutes.

Finally got some PE6 pins. First two shoeboxes using this tek. I'm pretty happy with it. Middle tub is entering beast mode.

Yeah, if they come in. So paranoid about aborts. My skills are so rusty after this long break. Hopefully, get a few clones...test them out...best one goes to a slant. That's what I've done in the past. All I have to say is don't stop, because myc is NOT like riding a bicycle.

Nice tek Ham, thats the one i choose for my first WBS jars attempt, im doing it tomorrow.
I have a question, I want to be sure what temperature the water have to be in the 5 mins simmer, does bring the stove to medium achieve keeping 200f for the 5 mins ? or it suposed to be lower ? asking cause medium temp can not be the same for me on my stove.
Thx.

You don't want water to exceed 200F, so begin simmer step with heat set to high. Using a meat thermometer monitor temperature of water until meat thermometer reads 200F, then turn down stove to medium temp, and start time.
If you feel that, or discover with your stove set to medium that water temperature climbs above 200F within 5 minutes allotted for simmer step, use meat thermometer to monitor water temperature during simmer step, and adjust accordingly.

Gonna have to give this a whirl. The soaking made me have to manage my time and plan ahead to where this sounds like a good method for cranking a out some jars on a whim.
Got 60# of white millet to tinker with. Should I go with the Milo/Sorghum approach or this one for white millet?

No, funky smells come from letting seed soak for more than 36 hours. In a nutshell, funky smells come from amount of bacteria that's allotted to multiply in that amount of time. With this Tek there is no soak, so no bad smells culminate due to bacterial multiplication. However, there is a chance that scent of WBS simply isn't palatable to some folks.

Well, the main goal is to not let the water exceed 200F for the simmer period, so use your meat thermometer to keep track of the water's temperature as to not let it exceed 200F during the simmer step making the necassary adjustments to your stove if need be.

Yeah, I'd much rather do this in make up bird seed bags on. If I can just do it in the jars. There are so I don't have to. Do you know? Make the whole for the. The bag 'cause I don't know how to do that. No one ever showed me in the pictures how to do that so. This is much easier, but if it back to my original question. Oh. 0400 degrees. Yeah, and then after that would be 200 I assume right. Can you leave it in for 200? Medium medium medium it would be 200 right 'cause my stove does not on. Does the data range stove and it doesn't have any only way I can see the temperature is it inside the stove with the thermometer. Alright, thank you.

OK so you have to go. Have it at 200 degrees Fahrenheit in the stove. And then you gotta have a long enough meat thermometer to reach into the water. And make sure it's not over 200 degrees. And then you're set to go right.

Correct, you'll need a thermometer long enough to reach into the water. Meat thermometers are good for that, and you can get them at any grocery store (assuming that's an option for you) for fairly inexpensive.

Pennington's Classic works great with this tek. And if you get a PC that's cheap and just holds 4 jars, you're probably going to regret it later. At least get a Presto 23 qt.

i'm phazed up about this getting tek started but my biggest concern is spore prints and inoculations loops excuse the spelling last time i failed and contaminated the water somehow. are you suppose to pc the loop and boil the water before making a supply? then pc the jar itself or can i trust a brand new jar i buy to make spore syringes. i'd rather not buy 20 or 30 spore syringes. IL TEK Any1 THANK YOU

All you have to do with the loop is wipe it down with alcohol before putting into the work area, and flame sterilze it between each use. No need to PC it. To make a spore solution you PC the water inside the jar for 20-30 minutes @ 15 psi, or above.
Instead of going through all the trouble of making syringes though it would be easer to inoculate agar with spores from print with your loop, and get a clean culture going before moving onto grains. https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/19208976#19208976

Correct, you'll need to start each solution with freshly sterilzed water. Add a water to jar, cap jar with lid (I prefer to use grain jar lids for this purpose), cover lids with foil (optional depending on filter material used), sterilze for 20-30 minutes at 15 psi, or above.
Syringes usually come pre-sterilized by gamma-ray, but if recycling used syringes linked below is the method I use to safely sanitize them. https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/12098357#12098357

I can attest to this tek. It's very simple. I ran it side by side with Frank's WBS tek and the results were just as good for about 1/100th of the work. This is my go to now.

Yeah I remembered I forgot the gypsum after I got the PC rocken when I did some a couple weeks ago. All was well with the white millet not clumping. Maybe more of a issue with rye berries.

Used this tek for my first attempt at grains and just want to tip my hat to you ham! This was simple and my jars turn out perfect!
Inoculated them with a MSS and after 3.5 days, they are already germinating and showing positive growth.
Thanks again for the great tek ham!!!

Tried the candy thermometer and it worked very well. The meat thermometer has always been kind of dodgy so I'm not sure if mine is broken or they just aren't very good quality in general. But the candy thermometer did the trick.
I definitely had the water getting way hotter than should have, although it still worked out ok for me... just produced a little stick in my seed.
But monitoring the temp accurately and not letting it get above 200 was perfect. Even in my cheap economy WBS full of cracked corn, no stick or mush at all

My first ever grain jars knocked up with my first ever agar.

I’m a newb at this and was wondering how they look. Not sure if they are to dry or if they will be okay. These were knocked up on the 19th. I did two with a CRS clone T1, and one with a MS Cambo T1 agar wedge.

Do you let your seeds cool/dry until a certain point of moisture content? Or are you literally letting them stop steaming/cool to room temperature and stuffing the jars. I'm curious what you're jars moisture content is like

when they are fully colonized and looking good. if you want to be super safe then you can give them a shake test once fully colonized (or now) and monitor the recovery to verify the health of the spawn.
you can g2g before your spawn is fully colonized but it is generally not recommended because you can be sure that things are healthy.

Shout out to Hamloaf. Been using this tek for a few months and have had consistently amazing results. I love how it isn't necessary to check the "dryness" level of the seed before jarring it; all you gotta do is let it cool down. Great stuff.

I posted this in another thread but may as well add it in the OG
I use the cheap "economy mix" WBS with corn, sunflowers, beans and all kinds of stuff in it. Its also super starchy.
When doing this prep method I rinse it real nice and good
Then I bring the water to 160-175 and reduce to low on stove.
The slightly lower temps works better with all the extra stuff in there and it still has a slight stick but it doesn't goo up or clump.

regarding this step:
Quote:
Fill pot of rinsed seed with water until water comes 2-3 inches above level of seed.
Is this cold or hot tap water? Cold water would result in the WBS being on the stove for longer before it reaches 200F ... just wondering if this would make a difference.
I tried this a couple of times but keep getting quite a few burst grains – mostly just the small, white grains are bursting (about 20% I think). Maybe I'll try 4 minutes next time

Some stoves run hotter then others. My opinion would be to run it till 180F then turn it down to simmer for 5min. This way the burner cools a little faster instead of heating your water to much during the drop.

my girlfriend loves eating all types of grain after they've been prepped. i typically make more than i need just so i don't end up a quart short while she helps me load jars or bags. but, she's a psycho.
i don't think it smells bad man.

WBS hydration methods -[EXPERIMENT]-
This is correct.

Hey hamloaf. Did you ever get around to experimenting with the low heat instead of the medium? I’ve noticed some of my jars stall out and was wondering if it might be because my seed is on the dry side after a while of colonizing.

Eating prepped WBS... shit son. Though, really, this kind of crazy tends to manifest in entertaining ways otherwise.

You want a simmer. To simmer a liquid is to keep it just below boiling. Hamloaf has you lowering the heat at 200°F. Boiling point of water is 212°F. Buy a cheap little infrared thermometer and take note.

The boiling was easy, straining not so much because I didn't have a wire strainer but a plastic strainer with large drain holes. Of the 12 jars, I contaminated 3, 2 stalled and the other 7 are fruiting like crazy on the first flush. I prepped another 6 qt of wbs last night, this time with a wire mesh strainer. Loaded 12 pint jars and 2 qt jars. Out of the pot this morning, shook them up. Will noc in 2-3 days. My altitude is 1450 m. The water boiling point is 204 F, makes it very easy to monitor the simmer. Thank you so much for this tek! I was hesitant to try grain until I saw your post.

This tek looks great and very approachable for a noob. Have those of you that used it recommend it in hindsight? Thanks!
