What are these orange gilled mushrooms?
    #24937677 - 01/23/18 11:14 PM (6 years, 2 months ago)

Habitat:
In wood chips under an Oak Tree, CA Bay Area

Pretty dense mushroom, more woody than most (similar to a Gymnopilus I found last year). No particular smell or taste. Any ideas? My first thought was a Cortinarius but I didn't see any obvious matches same with Gymnopilus. The decurrent gills are throwing me off.

Nope, forgot to mention that. No latex whatsoever fairly dry actually, no noticeable bruising either.

You think this mushroom looks like a South American crab-eating fox?

Good call, I've actually found Hygrophoropsis before but they were much more yellow and considerably more fragile than these so I didn't think they were the same. According to my guide Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca is more like a five species complex which explains the variability. I think this one is closest to Hygrophoropsis rufa but apparently that species classification may be shaky.

I'm not really sure that they are indeed Hygrophoropsis. I only know the type species first hand, and like you say
they are usually kind of fragile. It was the vivid gill color versus the bland cap and stem that made me think in that direction.

What color spores do you think it has? Can you do a spore print?

I didn't collect any (I should have in hindsight) but I did run my fingers along the gills and the spores seemed to be a kind of rusty or slightly reddish cinnamon color.
