Fruiting blue oysters in a half gallon jar
    #24938645 - 01/24/18 02:26 PM (3 years, 3 months ago)

Can it be done?  Do you experienced oyster Growers think it would work out okay?

I just have a bunch of half gallon mason jars lying around and I have four quarts of colonized blue oyster mycelium.

I made a log out of coir verm coffee and 1 quart jar. It's hanging in a cleaned out breadbag and is colonizing quickly.

But the jars seem like a better idea because I can just stack them on a Shelf next to a window or something instead of having to hang them.

Thoughts?

Criticism?

Thanks shroomery peoples!

It can be done. Its really tough to clean. Cultivators in asia use plastic bottles for King Oyster. I wouldnt reccomend manually cultivating mushrooms in bottles unless you had some sort of automation for cleaning them.

I'm just gunna try it.  I'll let you guys know how it works for me.  Anything picture worthy I'll take pics of and post.

This is the log I made a day and a half ago.      It's a very similar size and shape as a half gallon Ball jar.  I'm gunna go for it.

Thanks for your input chwyn!! When you say they're hard to clean do you mean like they're hard to harvest?  Or they are just more dirty that way in general?

Dang lol I had hoped to get more input on this.    I just pasteurized my bulk coir coffee verm gypsum mix.    Ill probably post pics later.

I hydrated it slightly under Field capacity like always.

didnt see bottom of your post. They were easy to clean. Its just that the mycilium is difficult to remove from the jar when youre done growing. With the bottles used in automated setups they use a drill ting to get it out. I had to break it up with a butter knife lol

Oh I see what you mean now, I'll keep that in mind.  I wouldn't doubt it at all!

I had three jars of oyster mycelium that colonized a little too long and they were VERY HARD to get out of the jar to spawn them lol.

I prepped out four jars just like this:

I've also got a humidifier on the way one plenty big enough to humidify my small room.  Needed one anyways

These are half gallon jars so everyone knows.

Bump?

Anybody else tried this?

Besides Chwyn of course!!

My jars are colonizing nicely    that breadbag log that I made is fully colonized and is getting whiter everyday.  How do I go about fruiting it?

Do I just wait until it's nice and white and Consolidated and then cut holes in the plastic?  Anyone is welcome to comment!!

As long as you pasteurized your sub you could've cut slits in the beginning, which I would do now. I do buckets and cut slits in my liner after spawning.

If you want nice flushes you should switch to straw, wood chips, or paper. Straw is pretty easy and won't poke holes in bags as easily as wood, paper has the risk of being too dense. Lignicolous fungi don't really care much for coir, they'll use it but it's not their preferred substrate.

If you want to learn more about lignicolous fungi you should talk to ferather and/or read his journal. He can be a little hard to follow at times, but he has no problems with explaining whatever he's talking about.

No problem! Here's some pics from my blues on straw, sadly they didn't keep much color in the cap because my light isn't strong enough. They were hands down the best oysters I have ever had, and my second flush is coming in. I upped fae so my caps should be nicer.

Those look great man:thumbup:  If mine look like that'll be extremely happy with it!

I just cut x slits into the plastic with a razor blade  about an inch long per slice, and just deep enough to get through the film.    2 cuts spots on 3 out of 4 sides of the log

I've had Aspen oysters but they were kind of tough.

I'm pretty sure I chopped up the whole mushroom, stem and all, when I put it in the stir fry. No wonder it was tough

If you don't mind another question or two, do you use a small Greenhouse to fruit those?

Or do you just have a humidifier in a normal room?

I just bought an ultrasonic humidifier and it's bringing my room humidity up to about 45 to 60 percent at 70 to 75 degrees.

Do you think that along with misting would be enough for an open-air grow?    I've heard they don't do well in monotubs.

From your posts it looks like they do quite well with the bucket Tech:thumbup:

I use a greenhouse that I threw together with 3m plastic and added a humidibucket and some fans as well as my cool mist (the fogger in my humidibucket just isn't enough).

I haven't tried fruiting oysters outside of the gh and honestly I wouldn't do it. Oysters are one of the heaviest sporulating mushrooms and you can become allergic to them. I have some polyfil stuffed into my exhaust duct to help catch some of the spores but I really need to run it outside, partially so I'm not recirculating co2.

Here's my gh build, minus the exhaust fan (I just haven't taken a picture of it lol).

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24879340

All together I spent maybe $120, most of that was on my fans and humidifiers. The actual structure cost maybe $25 and if I had more space I could've made it much larger for the same price. The only real change I would make is a better fogger, I spent $10 on the 1 I have and it sucks. The one I need will cost $100+

Thanks again man!  I'll have to figure out some way to maybe contain the spores.

Can you harvest early enough so they don't drop spores and still get a good yield?

Maybe  this is my first grow with oysters. Like I said, I stuffed polyfil in my exhaust duct to catch spores but running the exhaust outside will be the best bet.

The biggest factor, so it seems, for a good flush is high fae. Oysters are very co2 intolerant.

You can open grow oysters. If you can turn down your ultrasonic just point it at them, don't soak them. Pick early and often to eliminate spores.

It's fruiting!  Cool

Can I break this up and spawn it to some straw after the first flush.  I'm not sure how much I'm going to get this way.
