Trich causing mutations, safety?
    #24936120 - 01/23/18 12:23 PM (6 years, 11 months ago)

Hi guys, first time grower here. My cakes colonized at very different speeds, so I fruited them at different times. My first few were great and healthy and are still doing well, but my recent ones were delicate and 2 of them got trich (it also sporulated before I could even tell what was up, oops).

The delicate ones are in a separate FC and I'm just letting them fruit what they can before they inevitably get overrun as well, as they are likely already infected. However, I'm concerned about the safety of these fruits. Most of them look really messed up and blob like. Is this just due to the stress the cake is under or should I not eat anything?

Also in case anyone wants to be super helpful and give me tips for next time: My first few I waited until I could see pins or significant dehydration/density of the cake (basically no fluffy mycelium, they were pretty smooth). The other ones I got impatient after 5 weeks and birthed a week after full colonization, and those were still pretty fluffy and moist, and I think a 24 hr dunk was too much. Should I wait longer to birth next time, or dunk for less time?

You can birth from -3 days around full colonization or when you see pins appearing. Doesnt matter. It may have been that the cake wasnt fully colonized, they should be firm to the touch and not spongy. If theyre spongy that means theyre not colonized within it has nothing to do with water content. 24 Hour dunk is normal. Ive had this issue myself recently and the cakes are supposed to be firm and round and NOT SOFT or springy to the touch.
