Incubating issue. First grow
    #24930583 - 01/21/18 03:48 AM (6 years, 2 months ago)

Hello all. I’m doing my first little grow. Using the jam jar/ pressure cooker method.
Been incubating for 2 weeks total now and out of 7 jars I have 1 that is completely white and 2 that are partially white.
Now do I dunk the fully white one on its own or should I wait for the other two to full colonise?
It’s my first time posting and I’ll try and get some pictures attached to this.
Thanks for your help
Ps I have uploaded pics but can’t get them to show on here??

Thanks. Should I transfer the one that’s ready to go? Dunk etc? Or should I mix up some coco and use it for a bulk grow

either will work

mixing up with coir might increase your yield a bit but will add another vector for contamination

do you have a fruiting chamber?

and for the pictures, click the yellow icon above the posting box (3rd from right)
click on "my pictures" then copy the html code from under the picture you want to display and then paste it into the message you're posting. hope that helps?

I’m only looking to get enough for my first trip. Never done it before. Should I soak the completed one and put it in a fruiting chamber.
I haven’t made the chamber up yet. That’s a job for today potentially

The longer you leave them in the jar the better. Up to a point. They're safe and sound in their home. Wait til it is completely colonized on the outside and then wait another week. If you birth early the cakes will just sit in your chamber til they're ready to pin anyways. Your jars look good man. Be patient and in the meantime start some more jars. Once you start rolling there will always be something to do instead of waiting. Good luck!

Well first I would make that fruiting chamber and get your lighting and all set up and ready, has the one that's fully colonized been done and ready for the last week? If not let it consolidate inside the jar, you could even wait till you see small pins inside the jar then birth it.

Depends on how long that fully covered jar has been in said fully-covered state.

Birthing a jar the moment it's surface is covered often results in you having to wait anyway as the mycelium strengthens its networks and consumes some more of its substrate before it will actually fruit, all the while exposing it to an unnecessary contam risk. Consolidation also just results in more vigorous fruiting. See this thread for more.

Most on this site (such as Ziran above) will advise you to leave the jar for a week to consolidate if it only recently reached full colonisation.

Nice one. I’ll leave it and inspect in another week. I was worried that it might use all its water up and dehydrate

Hi. Do I need light above my fruiting chamber? I have this lamp from previously growing other plants ;-). It’s the right light spectrum but it’s a massive 300w.
Otherwise it would be in a room with a smalish window

That'll be fine.  Be sure to position the light far enough away from the substrate so that whatever heat emitted from the light doesn't fluctuate the temperature of the substrate.  Consider using natural light from a window coupled with artificial lighting.

Thanks. These cfl lamps don’t create any heat so should be fine. Can’t wait to try my first mushroom

Hi, just a quick question. I’m incubating in my airing cupboard as it’s 25C in there. It’s completely dark. Is this a good thing or should it be getting light?

idea conditions are more like 19-22C and light is beneficial to growing at all stages
:highfive:

Hi. Been a week since I birthed my first cake. Don’t know if I’m doing this right. I’m spraying water onto the cake and using a fan 3 times a day for a few minuets each time.
Don’t think it’s progressing right. What do you think?

Also, I ha e made little foil cups for the cakes to sit in with about a 10mm high rim. Should I fill these with water to ‘bottom feed’ as well as spraying?
