First try at oats
    #24930172 - 01/20/18 08:31 PM (6 years, 2 months ago)

This is my first shot at oats. The oats are from producers pride. I Followed Bod's most excellent procedure for PC'ing. All 6 jars looked like the one shown. This one I was saving a little longer to try my hand at grain-to-grain with a still air box. The other jar I was breaking things loose for tomorrow mornings spawn and one of the clumps inside the mass had what looks like a couple blue green grains? No beueno?

I can't see anything really but myc will def bruise blue when you shake it. it didn't look like you shook your jars initially as the first pic shows a big uncolonized patch on the bottom. if you suspect contams, shake the jar. when it recovers, it will be healthy or the contams will have expanded considerably.

OP, are you setting the jars on a heating pad?

Heating pad or not those jars are not fully colonized and should not be spawned

, the bluing you are seeing is bruised mycelium, which is fine. But the way those grains are clumping is suspect as are the grains pressed up against the glass in first pic. If the grains to not break up evenly/easily that isna sign of bacterial contamination, which can sometimes still produce fruits but often weaken substrates resistance for contamination.

Did you use agar or are these from a multispore syringe?

Agreed. Almost every post I read that has this same issue with the bottom not colonizing as in the picture was a result of placing jars on heating pads in hopes to speed up colonization. All this does is lead to dry, useless grains and bacterial contamination as mentioned above. I didn’t want to assume, but pretty safe assumption regardless

The sample jar shown I culled off to the side and ab waiting for it to finish. The other five went all the way. No heating at all, in fact I've been worried about this set because it's been so cold and haven't been able to keep there temps above 68 offten. This took 6 weeks to colonise.

cold temps are fine. we usually do a shake at 30% colonization to speed the process up. ideally the jar should be 100% in 2 weeks.

I would recommend buying a can of spaghetti sauce because they come with really nice one piece metal lids that have a rudder gasket for a seal, but you don't have to pry them off. you can just twist them off and it breaks the vacuum.
