Breaking up spawn
    #24926854 - 01/19/18 11:23 PM (3 years, 3 months ago)

I am having trouble breaking up a batch of jars. I must have make poor quality spawn or neglected to shake the jars soon enough. Can I use a butterknife to wedge the cakes out of the jar and then crumble it all the spawn?

I'd only used something that has been sterilized by flame or pc...but they sound bacterial spawn should break up fairly easy

I always mix my spawn up with my hands. I might use gloves, but they arent sterile.  Just use something clean. Bulk substrate is open to the air.

Hmm, I was just going to toss them but checked here first. The substrate is 100% rye, tiny bit of gypsum. Too much water I think, I'm having trouble straining; limited space. I'll let it sit longer and with more surface area I suppose.

I guess I will go ahead and try to grow these babies, use a sterile knife to remove from jar and break apart with hands. Ehh.

You could use your bare fingers. Its already colonized. Your just going to be mixing the spawn with substrate in open air with your hands anyway.

Not being able to break spawn up is almost always a bad sign tho

Sometimes its just overcolonized and been left to sit.
Also different species like ganoderma make very hard to shake spawn.

Cube spawn is normally very easy to shake/break up

Save yourself sometime just get a cheese grater much easier then crumbling.

Cheese grater is for cakes not spawn. Sounds like he made spawn not cakes though he himself is confused having used both words.

Cakes are verm brf and water
Spawn is kernels of hydrated grains
Cakes may be used as spawn Once grated or crumbled

Just wondering, would it be bad if colonized grains get busted? I know its bad in a spawn jar, but the whole thing is colonized, even the inside, right?

It is true, I need to stop mixing up the terms cake and spawn. I turn cakes into spawn... am I mistaken? Or do we not let spawn form into cakes, by continuing to shake up the grain/jar?

I did let these jars over colonize, without any doubt. Can this cause issues with mold or health. Tomorrow I plan on attempting to work with it. I may post pictures of the open jars. It seems like there are snowball-type structures on top of the grain.

I guess I will give it a go unless I hear otherwise.

Spawn: grains (rye, brf, oats, etc) that have been colonized with mycelium.

Cake: Colonized grain (usually brf/verm mix) that can be fruited on it's own OR used as spawn to colonize your chosen substrate.

Cakes are spawn. Not all spawn is a cake.

You can bust the grains up, break the jar, or top fruit that badboy in the jar.
