If, you push your trip even further back or plan another for fall/early winter I recommend the Grand Canyon. Hands down my favorite backpacking/camping trip. Spent three nights camping a couple Decembers back. First night on the rim, then we hit the main corridor. One night down by the Colorado River. And the next at Indian Garden. Had it all to ourselves.
But I could I imagine the summertime is crazy hot and crouded. December was perfect. Couldn’t easily through hike rim to rim, cause the north entrance was closed. But, for the most part except at the popular campsite with the lodge. Practically had the run of the park. Weather was perfect. There was snow on the rim, but we popped our shirts half way down.
Everywhere around Utah is awesome with a variety of different parks and accesses. Arches for a day trip was a highlight for me this past year when I hit up the same buddy. We’re making it a point to hit a National Park together every year.
Haleakala National Park in Maui will always have a special place in my heart. It’s like hiking through a Mars-scape. My favorite most intense hike of my life starts at the summit at 10000 feet and ends at sealevel 20 miles later.

If you're ever trying to introduce someone to the national parks, Acadia Nat. Park is a great one to start with. Very small compared to others that are out there, but it's worth checking out for sure.
Climbing to the top of Cadillac Mountain will grant you a view of the half the island as well as the Atlantic surrounding it. You could do a fair bit of exploring with just a simple weekend trip there.

Yeah, lava is cool too I guess. They don’t have that in most parks. ;p
Maybe, you can’t tell in the pic. Not recommended, but that’s close enough you could roast a marshmallow.

Just got back from great smoky mountains NP. We had a blast. It’s a very magestic place. It’s a place filled with endless streams and creeks running through it, long rolling hills/mountains. And trees. So many fucking trees!!!
Highly recommend this place to any fellow backpackers out there

That looks really nice. Kind of like Hanging Rock Park which if you're ever in NC you should check out. I only had time to spend 2 hours there so I'm not sure what they really have to offer, but it is beautiful.

Nice lava!
When me and my friends went, we got right up to the slow lava flow. One of my friends actually pissed on the lava he said it was really hot on his junk but was fun to watch it steam up.
Thats awesome DustyBottoms. Looks amazing. Reminds me of Sweet Home here in Oregon. Those hammacks are da bomb

U going to the Red Woods?
Really any road thats off the main roads will be pretty secluded. When I went in the summer, there wasnt many people at all.

I'll be coming from Texas and plan to go through Arizona to see the Saguaros again. Cross into southern cali and drive north. Hopefully go by the Huntington botanical garden. We want to see a lot of but the redwoods/giantsequoia are a must
We want to camp at places that are away from people or at least hoards of people without having to hike in. At big bend they have unmaintained roads you can drive for many miles out to nowhere and camp. Does this exist in any in cali parks? Im going to look for Air B&B's today as well for the days we don't camp. I wanna be surrounded by the gigantic trees and get groovy with cacti or maybe some fungi or even some good old lsd.
If any of you cali members have a place thats off the beaten trail and can be accessed via 4x4 I'd love to hear about it. I don't drive a monster truck or rock crawler but I have a full sized 4x4 f150 with new E load off road tires(nitto ridge grapplers) along with everything except a winch to get out of a bind and have driven off road for 10's of thousands of miles.
PM me that way your honey hole doesn't get trashed out if you are worried about that due to publicly posting it for the world to see on a forum. Loose lips sink ships. I respect people 'happy place'. I'll help yall out on places to see and things to do here in Texas, heck I'll even send a gift of cactus for the right information.
I'd like to buy some cannabis while out as well.
Looking forward to it! And as always I'll leave the camp area cleaner than I found it.

I've done that drive before and it is really pretty
Campgrounds that don't have a lot of people are pretty rare. A lot of the best campgrounds for the National Parks and wilderness areas get reserved right away. People take off work and wait by the computer on the day they open reservations to make sure they get a camping spot. You could do backpacking for pretty cheap at most National Parks. I know they have 4x4 trails near Yosemite and I think you can pullover and camp, but I don't know if you're supposed to.
Redwood State Park is really nice if you find yourself that far North. They have a beautiful coast there too. Muir woods in near San Fran and is also amazing, but can be extremely busy.
I think I'm going to head out to Kings Canyon this weekend to backpack check out some sequoias.

You definitely have to go to Sequoia National Park. It is the most beautiful place I have been to. I have been there at least 6 times. It's not really crowded either. Kings Canyon is equally amazing and it's right next to it. Probably 30 minute drive. In between is Sequoia National Forest. There is one road in the forest with a ton of spots to camp for free. You should be able to find a spot away from people. Of course there is no running water or toilets. You also need a permit for fires. If you go be sure to check out the General Sherman Tree. It is amazing. There are a bunch of free campgrounds there. I camped at Convict Flat in Kings Canyon and was the only one there. We had a deer in our campsite. There are also plenty of places you can just park and find a spot to camp illegally. I have done it a few times with no problems.

I have lots of maps trail, topo, and geolocical maps for BBRSP and some for BBNP. I got lots of books as well. I love it out there in the desert.
When are you thinking about going? Theres only 1 hospitable place out there in summer. That's the Chisos mountains in ntl park. Once you leave the mountains be ready for 110-115 degree heat.
We 'slept' the 1st night at BBRSP a few miles from the Rio Grande. It was well above 90 degrees at 10pm and don't think it ever got below 86 all night lol.
Whenever you got time send me a PM with what you have planned, when, how. I guarantee I can help you at with at least one piece of advice to make your trip better. Even if that advice is bring extra good tires, inflator, jack, jack stands, fixaflat, extra oil, antifreeze, EXTRA KEY, tow straps, jumper cables, gas can, tool box with wrenches/sockets/screwdrivers/ducttape/hammer/ect.
Sounds like a lot but you surprisingly it stows away pretty small especially if you are driving something under 1/2 ton. Plus believe me once you out out there(especially if not in the busy season) you'll see why. Help is far away especially on the unmaintained roads. Even the maintained roads are gnarly, it's basically a grader that drove through the desert, I've seen people with flats on the main road at BBRSP. I might bring an excessive amount if stuff but it's got me out of a bind and others that I see shitoutofluck. Most of that stuff just rides with me 24/7 365 so I pack around it..I work 50miles from home one way. So after driving a 66' Chevy and an dodge that had a hard life driving like a Baja racer at the beach for 10 years I guess I've had and seen lots of ohfuck situations over the years. Even my new truck has had its share of "well that truck will never be the same"(I was going to rescue these punk highschool kids at the very end of the beach where NOONE should ever take a vehicle. It's all mud flats and tide marsh. I was about to go to bed and they came walking up. I should have said no because I knew I couldn't help. Buy I tried anyways. As soon as I said 'I shouldnt be here' truck sinks deep, tide rising, tow straps break, call my buddy to bring 200+ft of tractor tough chain. Bad night. But truck survived somehow..
Man you got me all excited about another BIGBEND trip! Maybe this fall or winter I can get out there and photograph more coolness.
