One of my favorites is Yosemite National Park. So beautiful. So majestic. Its like being inside a piece of art, naturally made.

Another favorite is Volcano National Park in Hawaii. Feels like Jurassic Park. So amazing.

Someday, i wanna see Yellowstone. Thatd be incredible.

National Allegheny Forest!

I would like to make it out West sometime to see the Rockies. I have only been as far as San-Antonio.

Maybe Montana?

Well right now it's a tossup between Yosemite and Great Smoky Mountain.  Opposite ends of the spectrum on all fronts if you ask me but that's where my gut has taken me so far.  I ordered two guide/hiking books for each NP.  After a little more research I plan to finally pick one and then we'll zero in on our itinerary.

Also I've decided to push the trip back to July/August to allow for more planning.  Plus neither park look that appealing in April or early May.

It's funny how planning trips like this is almost as fun as the trip itself...almost

I have done some long distant hiking trails. My most recent trip was the John Muir Trail in the High Sierras, it was a great trip. You will enjoy the Smokies, there a number of different loop trails you make there. Although, there will be a lot of people in that area, mostly southbound AT hikers.

A little late, but Zion National Park is the most mind-blowing I have ever been to.

Zion, Great Basin, Grand Teton, Glacier Bay, Denali, hell man any national park is great no matter which one you pick. I have yet to be at a bad one, except Yosemite is insanely crowded which I dislike.

I prefer smaller camping sites, national forests, state forests, that kind of thing with far fewer people.

Do the Grand Teton, Yellowstone and then maybe Glacier trip you had mentioned if you are going in the summer. The trip of a lifetime, and yeah, there are bears, plan accordingly.

Some great suggestions above but I think those trips will be saved for another time.

We’ve decided to do Great Smoky Mountain National Park.  Hardly an otherworldly type place but I still think we will have a blast.

We’re going to wait and do this in mid/late October mainly for the pretty autumn colors but also to hopefully avoid the crowds as this is the most visited NP in the USA.

Campsite and hikes are still TBD and I need to do a little more research...any suggestions?

Sounds vaguely familiar. But no worries, all National Parks are awesome in their own respect

I’m really jealous of all of you in the western US, lots of awesome, huge parks to visit.

You just may freeze your ass off in the Smokey Mountains in late October. I froze my ass off in the nearby Nantahala Forest the third week of October, and all of the leaves had been gone for at least two weeks. I’d suggest going a few weeks earlier. The Smokey Mountains are beautiful. The Appalachian Trail runs through the middle of it. There are several campgrounds available. For me, the drawback for the Smokey’s is that it is very regulated if you want to camp on the AT. It requires a permit, and AT throughhikers take precedence. No dogs are allowed. Also, I think that you are required to stay in a shelter, which are notoriously infested with mice. Also, the place is crawling with bears, so study up on how to be bear smart. Make your reservations early.

I’m going camping on a 5 day trip to Cumberland Island in Georgia this Saturday. I’ve never been, but a bunch of YouTube videos make it look pretty cool. I think it will be the perfect way to usher in warmer weather, and a great place to trip.

Props to your pops and brother.  Hiking a thru hike at some point in my life is definitely a bucket list item.  AT or PCT are probably the ones I want to do most, but getting eaten alive by a bear scares the shit out of me.  Especially the PCT.

We've already picked our route and we're just waiting for the backcountry campsite reservation page to open up.  We're going to hit up the SE corner of the park and do a bout 30 total miles over 3 days.  Mt Cammerer, Big Creek, and Mt Sterling will be a few of the highlights.  Campsite 37 night one, 39 on night 2, and 38 on night 3.  Can't wait!!!

I'm a little worried about my brother though.  He's never really done anything like this and he's not in hiking shape.  I told him to start doing some hikes around the neighborhood with small loads on his back.  Hopefully he'll follow through..

Sequoia and Kings Canyon are my favorites. Ive been there like 6 times. I used to live a couple hours from there. So beautiful. The General Sherman tree is amazing. It took my breath away. There is a view going into Kings Canyon that just takes your breath away also. There is this spot in Kings Canyon by a little river that not to many people go to. There is a little log right there to sit on. We got some beer from the store there and just sat there and put the beer in the river to keep cold. Just so beautiful and peaceful. We didnt have any weed unfortunately that would of made it even better. There is a trail in Sequoia National Park I hiked for a while that takes you to a couple of lakes. I didnt make it to the lakes but it probably was my favorite hike I have been on. Its a long trail good for backpacking but I dont remember the name.

I went to Rocky Mountain National Park last year and that was really nice as well. Estes Park is a cool town with some excellent breweries. There is one brewery called Lumpys Ridge I think. Its an old little gas station converted into a brewery. There are just like 3 spots at the bar. The have tables outside that are propane and have flames coming out of the middle to keep you warm. Very cool. Probably the best view of the mountains in town. The beer was some of the best I have ever had.

I almost quit my job about 8 years ago to hike the PCT. I think there are more bears on the AT but I could be wrong. I seen a small bear probably just left its mother while I was in Sequoia National Park. They had the road closed going up there for a bit so I was waiting there. It was climbing down the mountain and came onto the street. I was so tempted to go try and pet it. Bears scare the shit out of me though. That is literally the only thing that frightens me in this life.
